Review summary

Excellent first cruise, and now I see why Holland America Line is considered one of the best in Alaska

Embarkation

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Most of our meals were in the buffet, but with two dinners in the main dining room (including one Gala) and one at the Pinnacle. I found the quality and variety to be above what I expected.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
I'm sure everyone knows by now that HAL doesn't have much in the way of activities. We mostly stayed on our balcony or enjoyed cappuccino in the Explorations Cafe.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
We only attended Billboard Onboard and the BBC Earth presentation, both of which were very enjoyable.

Children's Programs

No children traveling with us

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
It was apparent that much of the staff was new and still learning following the 2020 layoffs, but most were friendly and enthusiastic.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I really appreciated the historic photos and replica artwork in the halls and common areas, along with the timeless wraparound promenade deck. Staff were constantly cleaning and rearranging; it looked neater to me than most land hotels.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Cabin is small as you'd expect on a ship, but comfortable and well laid out. The one drawback is that the sofa was nearest the entrance and the bed by the balcony door; I'd have preferred the opposite as my mother in law's cabin next door (6169) was.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Also quick and easy
