Review summary

We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and totally exhausted ourselves with al the touring. Emerald Princess is an old, small (but clean) ship. Good for a "no frills" cruise.

Embarkation

Was great! Glad to see our bags already in our room when we got onboard!

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

They were okay, but not as good as the Grand Princess we took 10 years ago.

Piano bar guy was great. Didn't attend any others because we were too exhausted from touring.

Children's Programs

No kids

Service and Staff

Our room steward, Renato, was great! Room always clean & refreshed. The waters in the Michelangelo dining room and Crown Grill were great. Special touch in celebrating our anniversary.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
For some reason we found this small ship's layout very confusing. We usually can navigate it within the first couple of days but didn't until the last few days. Old, but clean.

Cabin / Stateroom

Was really pleased with the closet space and storage, the large balcony and comfy bed. However, the bath was small and the shower was hard to manipulate.

Ship tip

A good ship without all the bells & whistles!

Ports of call

Barcelona, Spain

We flew into Barcelona a day ahead and wanted to see Park Guell and was disappointed that they were booked for the day. Had been there before and had seen the other sites.

LA SEYNE-SUR-MER (TOULON), FRANCE

Took the ship's excursion and wasn't too impressed, other than the cathedral visited. The tour guide walked too fast and didn't seem concerned when I fell.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

Was upset that we had to take 3 separate buses to get there! More time traveling and not enough time to be able to tour the cathedral or even climb to the top of the tower. Was under the impression that it wasn't that far from Livorno. And it definitely wasn't a 10 minute walk to the piazza from where the bus left you off.

Valletta, Malta

Did the on/off bus. We had seen the Mdna before so wanted to see the beaches I had heard about. Beautiful, but no real place to stop and spend some time.

Kotor, Montenegro

Took ship's excursion and was really impressed with bus driver in navigating all those hairpin turns! Beautiful views and countryside.

Corfu, Greece

Again, ship's excursion and it was a great tour.

Palermo, Sicily

This ported in Messina, not Palermo. However, wished we'd had more time to visit. Excursion to Taormina and of Messina and it was great. Beautiful views of Mt. Etna erupting and of the coast in Taormina. Loved the walking tour in Taormina and the shopping!

Naples, Italy

Our main reason for taking this cruise was to see the Amalfi Coast and it didn't disappoint. However, I was not pleased with the tour guide at first. We booked this through Cruises Only because of the reviews and being able to see all of the coast. First of all, the tour guide was late. This was an all day tour and I knew it was cutting it close to get back to the ship. This was supposed to be a small group, but then they let us to a different bus in which we had to walk a few blocks. After that, we had to pick up two other sets of people and with Naples traffic stalled us an additional hour before we got on the road! The tour guide did not say anything, or apologized for the delay! I was furious! This was to be my highlight of the trip and if they were going to have to skip a stop, I was really going to be upset. However, she assured us we would do/see it all, so on we went. Yes, the traffic was awful, but the views were spectacular! Glad that it turned out to be a nice day, with visits to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with lunch and a boat ride which we didn't expect. It was great but still worried we wouldn't get back to the ship on time. The driver took another way back and got us there half hour before boarding time. Whew!

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

We didn't tour from the ship, just disembarked. We stayed in Civitavecchia for 2 nights before flying home.

Smooth and good. Just had trouble locating the bus to take us to the city, then find our hotel.
