Disney Dream

5 Night Bahamas (Port Canaveral Roundtrip)

Sail date: June 28, 2019

Ship: Disney Dream

Cabin type: Balcony

Traveled as: Couple

Reviewed: 5 years ago

Review summary

We chose this crusie for the double-dip visits to Castaway Cay, and to catch up on all the Disney films of the past few months. I think we saw six. This was our 34th Disney cruise, so we know what we want and what we like.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Fairly smooth, but crowded. The Port Canaveral terminal was designed for the Magic class ships, and the Dream brings in more passengers than it really has room for.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Disney Cruise dining had a weak period a few years back, but fare in the main dining rooms is definitely back up to par. Palo still has the best brunch afloat, and Remy is perhaps one of the best restaurants in the world (it's certainly priced that way).

Remy

The food and service were outstanding, as expected. We chose the wine pairings, but were disappointed by some, and the sommalier was not terribly informative (but then I'm a 2nd level som. myself). I suggest choosing a bottle or two, then have them transfer what's left over to the regular dining room to finish another night. Be advised that even without add-ons, we spent over $500 on dinner.

Royal Palace

4 out of 5

Comfortable (especially compared to the Enchanted Garden). Good food and service. This is the spot for table service breakfast and lunch, so we saw a lot of it.

Palo

5 out of 5

Best brunch afloat, and better than any offered in my town. Remember to slow down, and don't try to eat everything -- it's just not possible.

Enchanted Garden

3 out of 5

Food's good, but this room always feels cramped. We were led to our table through a service area for lack of aisles. Would really prefer to avoid it (just not quite enough to visit Cabanas).

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Due to a lack of children and some physical diabilities, we were not able to participate on this trip.

Entertainment

We did not attend any of the shows, partly due to my wife's intolerance of children, who were more in evidence on this cruise than usual.

Children's Programs

no kids

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Disney-quality service almost everywhere. A bit of communication trouble with our cabin steward, but that was probably language.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Maintenance and cleanliness were excellent, as usual. The design of the ship is not great, as there are a number of pinch points that are routinely crowded, and elevators were not sufficient to the demand.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Good size, love the double bath, a bit crowded on one side of the bed.

Ship tip

Vanelopie's Sweets -- fancy ice cream and gelato!

Ports of call

Castaway Cay (Disney Private Island)

5 out of 5
A bit of shopping, a nice lunch, and some quiet time on the trails and at Serenity Bay. Best of all, we came back the next day and did it again!

Nassau, Bahamas Did not visit port

Probably the least welcoming and dirtiest port in the Caribbean.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Very fast, we were on the road by 9:10!

You make a good point about the pinch points on the Dream class. We mostly sail on the Wonder and even with it being slightly smaller, the capacity makes it feel way less crowded. My parents want to cruise with us but will be dependent on elevators. I want them to experience the Fantasy but will prob need to stay with the Wonder with my dad having a somewhat short fuse/ not a fan of crowds.
