Review summary

We just returned from a 7-day cruise on Celebrity's Mercury, their mid-sized ship, round-trip from Seattle, WA. This was our second time on the Mercury and for this Alaskan itinerary - we enjoyed it so much the first time we took our parents along this trip - everyone had a great time. Some of the highlights were: the White Pass railway in Skagway; Hubbard Glacier (the ultimate in breath-taking scenery); and of course the shopping (rivals the Caribbean for jewelry). We were able to spot some whales, dolphins, seals, and an eagle or two - we didn't see any bear or moose, but we didn't do many land excursions. From the Express Embarkation (using the on-line generated boarding pass) to the new Express Departure (at 7:30am we took our own luggage and breezed through customs), our trip went smoothly. The only glitch was that our ship's captain was found to be inebriated and thus stripped of his command and the process of putting a new captain in place took a few hours so our departure was delayed; this put us in Juneau a few hours late, but I'd rather that than a captain that was piloting under the influence (we received a letter in our cabin the next day explaining the situation - they were very frank and direct - unfortunate thing to happen, but they handled it well). We especially enjoyed the Thalassotherapy Pool (we purchased the weekly pass for $99) - also we partook in the massage, acupuncture therapy and facial services - a great way to pamper yourself.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The dining room service and meal quality is better than expected for the price - Celebrity never fails to deliver

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The shows were hit and miss, but the comedian was spectacular

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The wait staff and officers were all very friendly, accommodating and willing to do whatever it took to make us comfortable.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Although the Mecury is beginning to show a little wear, we were told it was going into dry-dock in April of 2007 for an extensive redo.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Starting to show some wear; however the bed was pretty comfortable and spacious enough for the two of us.

Ports of call

Ketchikan, Alaska

The best place to buy jewelry in Alaska that I know of - for men's jewelry, try Princess World Jewelers for unique and reasonable pieces.

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
Nice town, but it is quite a walk into town so take the local bus for $1.50 one-way.
Don't Miss: White Pass Railway is a must.

Juneau, Alaska

Don't Miss: The Russian shop (can't recall it's name) is a great place to get some unique gifts
