Carnival Victory Cruise Was Mediocre to Disaapointing

Sail Date: January 06, 2013

Reviewed: 3 years ago

Traveled As: Singles/Friends

Room Type: Balcony

Carnival Cruise Lines has vast room for improvement on its food quality and service. I am consistently disappointed in the presentation, quality, and taste of the food served on their ships. At times it was mediocre, but most times simply disgusting and not palatable. The buffet items looked liked something from "Vegas Vacation" ("I'll have some of the yellow please") and the meals were often cold, under or overcooked, and generally poorly prepared. The food service staff was neither motivated nor concerned, and it was rare to find any that "went the extra mile" in service. The shows were also puerile, poorly staged, and monotonous. Room service, deli, and grill are the best options for food; what can they do to make a sandwich taste too bad! Cabin service team was excellent!
Ship Quality
Food and Dining
Generally disgusting. Really.
Cabin / Stateroom
Needs updating. Broken panels and huge old obsolete CRT TV on a shelf. No refrigerator. Bathroom smelled heavily of urine, even after scrubbing - probably from bilge drains in the floor.
Service and Staff
Unconcerned and arrogant, except for cabin service personnel.
Entertainment
Children's Programs N/A
Onboard Activities
Silly and stupid. Director was obnoxious.
Destinations and Excursions
Barbados and some shore tours are to tourist traps to sell you something and are a rip-off.
Basseterre, St. Kitts
OK. Take the rail and sail trip.
Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas
Avoid the tours and go on your own.
Bridgetown, Barbados
Very poor and poverty-stricken area. Tours are disappointing.
Philipsburg, St. Maarten
Beautiful. Take the Ride and sail tour.
Castries, St. Lucia
Like Barbados. Poor and slummy.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Visit often, so know where to go...and where to avoid.

Tip

Stay away from the buffets and be judicious about what you order in the dining rooms. Don't set expectations high, as you will be sorely disappointed. If you eat eggs for breakfast, specify that you want FRESH eggs (not cartooned or powdered) and don't order them scrambled under any circumstances. What you'll get is a hard-fried egg sliced into smaller pieces.
