Carnival Triumph

5 Night Western Caribbean (Galveston Roundtrip)

Sail date: November 07, 2011

Ship: Carnival Triumph

Cabin type: Balcony

Traveled as: Couple

Review summary

For a Carnival ship, this was probably fine - decent food, accommodations and activities. However - our prior cruises were on Royal Caribbean (excellent) and Norwegian (very good). In comparison, this cruise was average/adequate but certainly nothing special and less than we'd expected.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Food selection and variety was adequate but again, not nearly what we'd expected after our prior cruises. The buffet area was poorly laid out (one double-sided line with one salad/dessert bar) and always congested. The same dinner choices were available at the buffet or dining rooms - again, pretty disappointing. We'd expected much different, more sophisticated choices in the dining rooms.

Entertainment

1 out of 5
Main activities seemed to be bingo, karaoke and silly pool games (hairiest chest). Many shows were scheduled at or after 10:00 pm - some as late as 12:30, which meant we never were interested in attending.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Everything was fine but not nearly as nice as the other ships we've been on. They had a separate theater and showed first-run movies (here the big screen on the pool deck showed films of concerts of Cher, Michael Jackson, Sheryl Crow and kids' movies.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
We stayed on the Spa deck (11th floor), which was great. The view and location (away from the main ship's areas) made it very desirable.

Ports of call

Progreso (Merida), Mexico

5 out of 5
Uxmal Mayan ruins were great and well worth the trip. We arranged the trip through Carnival rather than Orbitz - saved at least $50 and were much happier with the arrangements.
Don't Miss: Mayan ruins

Cozumel, Mexico

we just went shopping in the port, which was a typical Mexican town.
Don't Miss: shopping

Pros: Mayan ruins - Uxmal shore excursion

Cons: food, restaurants and activities

Recommends Carnival Triumph? No.
