Review summary

Very unhappy with this Carnival Cruise. Too many children. Very unorganized at ports. Ports had rocks so swimming was impossible. I will not go a Carnival Cruise again. We choose the cruise because of the Charleston Port. Fairly close to where we live. Driving distance. This was a mistake.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
One could tell this was a old warehouse converted to an area to board the ship. Fairly organized! Parking was at a premium. Luggage staff were very polite and extremely nice and efficient. Had to ride a bus to board the ship.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Service was very good. Food was mediocre at best. Selection was acceptable. We did not do the premium dining cost was too much.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Did not use the pool as only a few did. Weather was too cold.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
The shows were all music themed. One of the three shows we attended was delayed due to technical difficulties. Some nights there was no show at all.

Children's Programs

2 out of 5
No small children!

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Room steward was very nice and attentive. Waiter and staff were very polite and made one feel welcome. Staff in the buffet area were not friendly and rude at times.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Ship was very clean, constant cleaning was observed.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
There were three people in our cabin. Myself, wife and 28 year old daughter. Room was crowded. The bathroom smelled of urine upon arrival and I had to ask the room steward to clean it. He did —— then it smelled of ammonia. I believe the urine smell was cooking from the drains in the floor as it returned. Staterooms are for two people max.

Ship tip

Do not go during Christmas. Too many children - which were a nuisance. Riding elevators. Harassing the bar staff! Roaming the halls at night and making too much noise. I will not use Carnival again as I believe there ships are designed to accompany families with children.

Ports of call

Charleston, South Carolina

Enjoyed Charleston we arrived two days prior and went to Folly Beach, Isle of Pams and did some shopping in the downtown area.

Princess Cays (Cruise Line Private Island)

Disembarking experience was a complete nightmare. Very unorganized. It took too long to disembark. The beach area was very rocky. One could not swim due to major rocks. The lunch buffet was fair. Burgers and a hot dog—- no chili. Jerk chicken was all bones. Very unhappy.

Grand Turk Island

Beach area had rocks, could not swim. Shopping okay. Would not recommend.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

4 out of 5
Very good shopping. We did the shopping beach excursion. Beach was okay however it was very windy. Did not observe any people in the water.

Disembarkation

Very unorganized and waited to long. One hour and 45 minutes to begin the process after arriving. We carried our ones luggage or it would have been longer. Had to walk and walk and walk. Just one more reason why not to take a carnival Cruise. Our cabin was on Deck 6. One was called by deck to begin the process to disembark. Everyone on the deck begins the process at the same time. Very crowded.

We just got off a Christmas cruise on Princess, we had approximately 300 kids, when you go over the holidays expect children. Also carnival is known for a younger crowd with kids.

Thanks for sharing your cruise

We always go on a cruise when the kids are in school. I would suggest to try them again and you would have a different experience. The rooms are crowded if you have more than 2 people per room. We LOVE Grand Turk. You should have gone past Margaritaville down to Jacks Shack. That is the best place to go and the sand and water is beautiful. It’s maybe half a mile. Beautiful view of the ship too.

You want to avoid kids, don’t go on holidays. It’s not Carnival’s fault you planned to go at Christmas when so many families go on cruises.

Should have turned left instead of right at the end of the Grand Turk pier. Lots of beach to the left.

Sorry about the holiday cruise.

Like the others said it was a Christmas cruise of course kids were going to be aboard. You gotta research before booking or just go on Virgin cruises it's all adults.

Appreciate your detailed feedback. Sorry you were disappointed. Not all cabin limits are for 2 passengers, some are 4+.

Why do so many not realize a Christmas cruise will be crowded with lots of children?

No matter the cruise line, there will always be lots of kids during the holidays and when schools are out. You'll probably have to sail Celebrity, Holland, or Princess to encounter fewer kids. Stay away from Royal, NCL, and Carnival. The rocks on the beach is not the fault of the cruiseline. Hopefully, your next cruise will be better.

Never cruise during a holiday or when schools are out of session
