Review summary

It was my first cruise and I think my overall all experience was positive rather than negative. First impression was... just a lot of people... everywhere, deck, restaurant, etc... I could not avoid. Even if I stay in my room, people are very loud outside until very late. I got motion sickness on the first few days, and I was sick of just lots of people throughout the entire trip, which includes getting off and on at port. I took two kids (6 & 7) - I did appreciate that they have complementary Camp for kids that I could drop them off a few hours here and there. My complaint about the ship is, considering the amount of people (~ 3000), why did they make such a small pool!! Out of two small pools (and three "hot" whirl pools), kids have access to only one pool and two whirl pools. The only one "cold" pool gets so crowded during the day and I had to pull my kids out several times because it was just too dangerous to stay in that pool. Also, if you are not into smoking, you would be surprised how entire ship smells like smoke - basically Casino is smoking area and that leads to open ship area and you can just smell smoke everywhere, not to mention that they somehow decide to set up smoking area on the deck where I need to walk my kids through to get to Camp, I just did not like the set up at all. Food - the buffet area is just average. They change main (meat, pasta, etc....) but salad bar and dessert area were almost same every day. Steakhouse and Asian JiJi restaurant were good. Japanese restaurant (bonsai) was a joke - other than Sushi, there was nothing about Japanese and Sushi quality was really bad that supermarket sushi tastes much better. It should be included in the free meal like other all inclusive resort does.  Since there were 4 sea days total, I think they did good job with entertainment. Most shows were good, and I also enjoyed outside movies when I could find seat. In summary, prepare to deal with lots of people and also slippery deck. Next time, I think I will just fly into all inclusive resort where I can get away from people when I want to.

The room was surprisingly calmer (in terms of motion) when the current was relatively rough. View was not obstructed, and I think it was a good choice for my family of 5.

Since I had two small kids, I decided to stay in the cruise center area but if you don't need to, you should go to different beach as it was again sooooo crowded :(

Wow, talk about hitting rough seas.

Why are you getting defensive. We are all here to share information. There is no wrong answer. Ppl take what's useful to them and leave the rest. This site I believe is to get excited about our vacations. I appreciate the information you share if I agree or not.

Yes but The Destiny was around 1000 less than that is my point Actually it's 3006 double occupancy & up to 3600 adding in children, etc. That was how guest services explained it to us. When it was the Destiny it held 2642 passengers max so being there was a lot of kids on board & it was sold out I'm saying there was probably closer to 3600 on the ship. I do my research & get my info from Carnival itself. I can see I'm beating my head against a wall though so I'll just leave this discussion. I was actually agreeing with you Idennis64 about RC so I don't know why you chimed in with your numbers or where you got them. Either way I'll leave you guys with it. Good day

The Sunshine can hold up to 3100 people that's max capacity

chvygrl10    8 years ago

nickman684, that's not necessarily true. We went on the Fantasy & it wasn't near as crowded. The bottom line is the Sunshine was not originally built to hold the amount of people it now holds. That is where the overcrowding comes into play. Common sense tells anyone that

Try Royal Caribbean. We enjoyed it and was not as crowded as carnival

Bottom line is the ship was not originally made to hold that many people so that's why it was so crowded. You add 182 cabins to already existing space & common sense says there's going to be too many people. If it had originally been built to hold that many it'd be a different story. The food in the MDR was good but we stayed clear of the buffet. The deli was good as well as the Blue Iguana Cantina but it was only open for 3 hours a day.

We went on the Sunshine in October. Not as crowded. We cruise in October and April while kids are in school. I know you have kids and that summer may be your only option. Try one of the bigger ships. Remember it is a vacation. Better than being at work.

The Sunshine is geared towards kids. We were on it during spring break and never had a problem finding a seat. Sometimes they are not by the pool but you can find one some were. We liked deck 10 forward, it was quite and peaceful up there. Our granddaughter checked her self in and out of camp carnival which saved us a lot of steps. She learned the ship quick and could find us easily. She took good care of her cousin as well. They are both 11. She is also well trained on what to do If anyone tries to mess with her.

We always cruise in the spring and fall and find it's not as crowded.

You hit it on the head. Cruising is not something for any one who doesn't want to be around people. There is only so much room on a ship. I'd say pick a smaller ship but everything is proportional. Less people but smaller ship, same problems. Its not for everyone. I will say this though, down the road, when you're able to, try it with just your spouse and some friends. Most of the stress come from trying to keep an eye on the little ones. I've been there. Now we just love it.

Cruised on the Sunshine twice. Gave it a second chance but it is just so crowded. Not enough deck space. 40 minute rule not enforced so very difficult to find a lounge chair.

I think a resort is your best bet going forward.
