Sail date: February 13, 2020

Ship: Carnival Sunrise

Traveled as: Large Group

Review summary

My parents, who have never cruised and never really wanted to, are already talking about going back. I'd say that's a success! Thank you, Carnival Sunrise, for an unforgettable trip.

Embarkation

There is construction at the pier so it's a bit loud and lots of commotion. TSA was fine but the Carnival workers were in full drill sargent mode yelling at guests and each other! Part of our group got to port at 11am, the others at 12. We had check in times ranging from 12-1:30. They didn't matter. They let everyone on the ship whenever they got there! PRO TIP: While everyone was being herded to deck 9, we made our way to the back (aft) of the deck. There are many more chairs, another (quieter) pool, a bar and easy access to the deck 10 restaurants.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
We ate at the Sunshine Restaurant every night and it was great. But YOU MUST make your way to Guy's Burgers and BlueIguana. They are next to each other on the Lido deck and AH-MAZING. Good food was also found at the deli, pizza shop and Pig n Anchor. The buffet was not great to me but several others liked the offerings.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
I only made out to one comedy show and she was funny. Several family really enjoyed SoulBound (I think that was the name) and a few others shows. There was plenty to do for all.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
My nephews, ages 9-14, had a ball in their respective clubs. Arts n crafts, talk groups, pizza sessions. Oh and that Build-A-Bear workshop... well let's just say that was a big hit! Both boys are autistic and they both felt comfortable in their surroundings. The staff was gentle and made the boys feel at home.

Service and Staff

Our steward, T, was the bomb. I'm in a wheelchair and he made sure I was always taken care of. Additionally, our wedding coordinator Ionela and cabana steward Mini were stellar.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
With the recent health concerns, I was happy and relived to see someone wiping down some area of the ship ALL THE TIME! I mean really. The hallway rails, elevator buttons, stairway rails, lido deck chairs. Someone was always cleaning something and I was grateful. The ship was beautiful and I appreciated the changes that were made. Walking through the casino to get to certain areas was not always great but not horrible.

Cabin / Stateroom

Thank God for extra plugs and USB ports! Had a handicap accessible room and it was tight but serviceable. My room steward Ketut "T" was awesome.

Ship tip

Take motion patches! We had seasoned cruisers in our group very affected. It is still wave season. You'll thank me later!

Ports of call

Nassau, Bahamas

Didn't book an excursion. Just took to the streets and enjoyed the scene. Stumbled into a local bar along the way. Was only put for a couple hours but that was more than enough. It was fun.

Half Moon Cay, Bahamas (Private Island)

I was anticipating HMC being one of the highlights of our trip and it did not disappoint. My family spluged and rented the private oasis cabana. When I say it was worth every penny, that's an understatement. Every one in our party, from age 9 to 73, was catered to and had a grand time. We had everything from snokeling equipment to a private hot tub to our own dedicated staff, everything was top notch. Not to mention the catered food and drinks from our personal bartender. I don't know if I'll ever be able to enjoy this beautiful island any other way! Truly spectacular.

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

No excursion. Just a pre-cruise hotel stay at Ramada Inn Airport/Cruise Port. Clean, restaurant on site, Free shuttle, free breakfast, free wifi, free printing.

Disembarkation

I have cruised before and I know that disembarkation can be crazy, but this was INSANE! The line was at least an hour long+ and there were only 2 customs agents! Because my father and I were in wheelchairs, our party went through a different line but oh my goodness... that was a bad last impression.
