Review summary

If you're looking for "The Fun Ship" I guess this might be it; but if you're looking for more nature and wildlife exposure, the Spirit is a bit lacking in that. The large ship and passenger load was easier to live with than we expected - they do handle the crowds very well. The food and dining choices were excellent and the service staff was marvelous.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
the restaurant was very skimpy on vegetables and fruits; that was disappointing to me. the meals were good, but not as original as restaurants at home.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
mediocre quality of shows; dining room entertainment was very weak. "seminars" were pure marketing. opening "learn all about Alaska" naturalist lecture was held during dinner, with no repeat informational lectures and sessions were not available on closed circuit TV - you miss it and that's that

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
I don't know how the cabin crew learns all the guest names each week, but they always greeted us warmly.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
A bit flashy, and certainly the riske decor was not kid-friendly - not appropriate for a family ship. but the ship was quite clean; common areas kept very well; elevators worked better than my office building at home fairly easy to find you way around after a day or so

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
we had a large stateroom and it was wonderful. The cabin staff were great.

Ports of call

Skagway, Alaska

5 out of 5
we loved the jeep excursion up the Klondike Highway, although we didn't stop enough for photos.
Don't Miss: salmon creek near piers

Juneau, Alaska

5 out of 5
we didn't have anywhere near enough time here. We had to be back on the ship at 2:30 - no time to visit Mendenhall and do the town.
Don't Miss: Mendenhall glacier and visitor center

Ketchikan, Alaska

3 out of 5
we had way too short a time here
Don't Miss: had no chance to explore, but the eagles nesting on the land side of the ship were fun to watch!

Pros: The cabin and dining room service was wonderful -- especially the creative surprises left by the cabin staff in the evenings!

Cons: Too much marketing of excursions and shopping; not enough naturalist sessions.
