We just cruised the Carnival Paradise from the Port of Tampa. We visited Mahogany Bay in Roatan Honduras and Cozumel Mexico. We had a blast!
Port of Tampa: We arrived a day early and stayed overnight at La Quinta Inn & Suites located about 20 minutes from port on
Dona Michelle Dr. The hotel was very nice and was located by several nice restaurants and corner stores for any last minute items. We at at Stonewood Grill on the night we arrived. The food was AMAZING. We had a party of 8 and everyone enjoyed everything they ordered. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The manager, David was incredible he went out his way to accommodate us(as they are booked with reservations when we arrived). They allowed us to sit in bar area and as soon as they had tables come open, based on “no shows” David seated us all together.
Getting to the port was easy and stress free. We arrived at port right at 11am. We pulled right up and had our bags checked. The baggage rep we had was extremely patient and friendly. He allowed us to take our time getting our bags together and gave us great advice on how to organize our bags for easy boarding. Boarding the ship was smooth.
Note: Upon returning to Tampa, our ship was flagged by US Customs and we were delayed for about 3hrs.
Carnival Paradise: It is a smaller ship but it was still a fun time. Guys Burgers is addictive. The pizza was not good at all(my opinion). They did not have french fries as an all you can eat option, other than the ones at Guys Burgers( they are seasoned skin-on fresh cut fries). You can order regular fries from room service menu for $2 a serving.
Breakfast/brunch in the Destiny Elation dining rooms are a must. Much better than the buffet breakfast on Lido Deck. Corned beef hash was delicious!! They offer turkey bacon/sausage and chicken sausage. At dinner in the Destiny on the last night, salmon cakes were a menu option. These salmon cakes were the best I had ever tasted!!....very little breading, tremendous amounts of fresh salmon and herbs. The dessert options were not good in my opinion. I had to settle for ice cream each night.
The on-board shops offered a good deal on Hennessy White alcohol. 6 bottles for $250. We have not been able to find this in stores so we bought the case to give as gifts. The next to last day, there was a destination T-shirt sale 2 for $20. So if you are looking to buy t-shirts on the ship I recommend waiting until the day before you return. However, you can also definitely find t- shirts cheaper than that at the ports. Overall, I wish the ship had more buffet dining options but it is a nice ship, we booked more for destinations than ship amenities. The serenity area only had two hot tubs. But based on size of ship this is understandable but they definitely need many more umbrellas on the serenity deck since there is no pool to cool off in.
Mahogany Bay, Roatan Honduras:
We did not book a specific excursion at this stop but when got off the ship we went to taxi area. We found International Tours taxis. Our driver was Francisco. Please request Francisco. You will not regret it. He was awesome. All the drivers are English speaking drivers and will take you wherever you want to go and stay with you the entire time. It was about $45 person. We told Francisco we just wanted to see the island, the culture(not the tourist areas), and learn a bit of history about the island. FANTASTIC is not a strong enough word to describe Francisco. He took us into the neighborhoods showed us the homes, cemetery, schools, etc. he shared such great history about the culture. He allowed us to stop for pics. He even gave us a extensive history lesson on the Bojangles Fried Chicken restaurant😁( the only American fast food restaurant on the Island of Roatan). He took us to all the places that the locals go. He took us to the only shopping plaza in Roatan. We ate lunch at Snappers Seafood House. The fried conch and fried shrimp was delicious. Francisco stayed with us and translated for us in every shop we visited. The Pacers shop had very inexpensive t-shirts and souvenirs(you MUST stop/shop there if you tour the island).
We visited the ice cream shop in plaza and my husband bought ice cream for everyone in the shop. It was such a great intimate experience with the locals. We returned to Mahogany Bay beach and enjoyed about 2 1/2hrs there. The beach is absolutely stunning with plenty of lounge chairs and shaded areas.
Cozumel Mexico: We visited Mr Sanchos(based on the reviews here on Shipmate). It was only a 15 minute ride to the resort. We had a van of 10 people and it was $40 one way. When our total party of 15 arrived we were greeted by a host who led us to our spot. He gave us a cabana and 2 umbrella covered tables. Sauri was our assigned server and he was amazing. The Kayaks were included. All other water activities you have to pay additional for. But they have several different activities you can choose, even parasailing! There were three ships at port but Mr Sanchos was not crowded at all. It was VERY nice. The food was great, especially the shrimp cerviche. Drinks were non-stop but were a bit weak in my opinion. A couple of people in our party had massages done and said they were amazing. Right outside of the resort there is a Los Tres Tonos Tequilla tasting. You Must go by and do the tasting. This Tequilla is great. Victor and Edwin were tons of fun! If you like Tequilla, make sure you take your wallet because you will definitely want to purchase some once you taste it. We had an amazing time at Mr Sanchos and would definitely go back again. The shops at the port have tons of inexpensive souvenirs and several nice places to take great pictures.
