Review summary

I chose this cruise thinking my partner, who never cruised, would be more willing to try cruises if it stopped in Key West.  Well, shortly after booking we got a letter stating that the itinerary was changed and Key West was cancelled and replaced with Costa Maya.  Too late to cancel we went and decided to make the best of it.  We then started reading a bunch of poor and bad reviews on this site.  Well all I gotta say is that they were all wrong.  Yes, the ship is older and as such shows some age, BUT, the staff was awesome, and the ship was spotless,  It is one of Carnival's oldest and smaller class of ships at 70,000 tons, but there is still a lot to do and a lot of spaces to do it in. If you didn't have fun on this ship, it's your own fault.  The bigger ships may offer more amenities, but then again they also have more people to contend with.  This ship seemed just about right because there never seemed to be a long line for anything, and if there was a line it moved fast.  Remember Bigger isn't always better.

The Paris Restaurant on the Lido Deck was fantastic.  many different stations and the variety was awesome.  Mongolian Wok, Grill (Burgers and such), Chefs Choice, Pizza, Deli, Desserts, Salad Bar.  It was all there.  we were assigned to the Destiny Dining Room and only ate dinner there 3 of the 5 nights. Since we had the 6pm sitting we did try the Paris later in the evening to see what they had and quite frankly the food in Paris was better than Destiny.

As far as ports go, yes we were disappointed not going to Key West, but Costa Maya actually turned out better than we expected.  We actually had more fun in Costa Maya than Cozumel.  As far as I was concerned they could have cancelled Cozumel instead of Key West.

The Cruise Director Brandon was awesome.  He seemed to be everywhere and would talk to anyone about anything.  He was great.  The drinks we had on the ship were all fantastic.

We are looking forward to cruising on the Carnival Paradise again next year when it comes out of it's dry dock and refurbishment.  They will be adding a Guys Burger Joint, Blue Iguana and some of the other things the newer ships have as well as a water park on the aft end and re-doing all the rooms and pool area.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
The food in the Paris Restaurant (Lido Deck) was all very good. We had assigned Dining at 6pm in the Destine but only went to dinner there 3 of the 5 nights. Food was good but dining room service lackluster

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Brandon the Cruise Director made sure there was plenty of activities. The Towel Animal class was fun to do. The Q&A sessions interesting and some of the other activities fun.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
What entertainment I did see was awesome.

Children's Programs

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Our room steward Jeffrey was awesome and the whole crew in general was great. The only sour point was our Dining Room Waiter Joseph. He never once asked if anyone wanted anything to drink. When someone asked for a drink another person either took the order or delivered the drink. One person ordered a Diet Coke and it never came, another person ordered coffee and it was about 10 minutes before the cream came.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Yes, the ship is older, but very well kept. We did have a water issue one day but they shut the water off when most people were off the ship in Cozumel. Aside from that it was great,

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The cabin was the perfect size for the both of us, I have been on several cruises, all of which were Carnival so I was accustomed to it. It was my partners first cruise and he thought the cabin was great. We had a very good room steward Jeffrey and whenever he saw us said hello to us by name, even before officially met us.

Ship tip

If you can still get Faster to the Fun, do it. It was well worth it. We got on the ship at 11:30am, room was ready and we were unpacked and having lunch by 12:30.

Ports of call

Tampa, Florida

3 out of 5
The port is easy to get to and getting in and out was great

Cozumel, Mexico

2 out of 5
Too many peddlers and just not any good.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

3 out of 5
Go on the Bird Walk, it is well worth the $10

I've not yet met a cruise I didn't like! All were different, each was an adventure, and it's still the best type of vacation.

Thank You for making a positive review get so tired of drama on here....carnival is very gay friendly and you don't have to be in Key West which is in my option an overkill...glad you had a good time been on 2 already this year ....next one Dream Nov 12

While the older and smaller ships do not have the fancy new things the bigger ships have there is something to say about this class of ship. They are in a large part what made Carnival and cruising in general the success it is today. I always find the crew friendlier and the experience on smaller ships more intimate. Indeed bigger is not always better. Any cruise is what you make it. You had an itinerary change but still found a way to have a great time. Good for you! Too many of those negative reviews I believe come from folks who can't take a small change in stride or let a small event ruin an entire cruise. That's unfortunate for them but it sounds like you and cruising are a good fit. Cruise on ! 🚢
