Ship tip
Be sure to ask about the Behind the scenes tour. Schedule early. It’s $95 but worth every penny. You get to see areas of the ship and meet people you would never have an opportunity to meet otherwise. We actually got to go on the bridge and meet the captain and his crew. They have the best view ever!
We rented a private van through carnival. They have assigned places they are to take you. It was nice to see the island. However, everywhere we went they tried to rip you off. They all mark up the prices and then try to confuse you because they know you have the American dollar to pay with. Know the exchange rate and don’t let them confuse you. It’s best to take a cruise though the ship or stay in port. Poverty is horrible in the DM and it can be dangerous. Everywhere we went there were armed military people but we still didn’t feel safe.
They encourage you to take your own luggage off now and what a mess it is trying to get an elevator that isn’t full. Don’t book an early flight home and give yourself plenty of time. That way you don’t get stressed out try to get off and through customs.
