Review summary

This was my first try back on Carnival for the first time in 9 years. I figured after 9 years they should have improved after my last experience on the Carnival miracle which was just horrible. I booked this ship because they went to Puerto Rico and stayed in port for 8 hours. The ship also went to Turks and Caicos as well as St. Maarten which is my favorite island. We only made it to Turks and Caicos in St. Maarten because it was stormy and the waves were rough. I definitely appreciated their desire to keep us safe so we stayed in Port at grand Turks for 8 additional hours,  which caused us to miss out on Puerto Rico. This brought our total days at sea to four days. I usually do not mind days at sea but the cruise director had nothing planned every day but trivia. I did not know there was so much trivia to be added and I was all trivia'd out. The shows were great but for some reason carnival thought it was a good idea to have the female dancers in thong bottoms, so I saw a little more show then I wanted to. Some of the performers looked extremely comfortable because of it. For some reason all of the entertainment they actually did have was overlapping in time. So when they're finally was something to do on the ship you had to choose between one thing or the other. But from 11 in the morning until seven in the evening there was nothing to do but trivia or watch horrible deck games. The props for the deck games look like they were purchased at the dollar store as well as all of their so-called giveaways. Beads and glow steaks are not exciting for those of us over the age of 13. The deck party's pretty much sucked. All they did was do the same old line dances that we always see everywhere at every event and when they were done with those three dances the party was over. The dancers that were meant to get us excited look like they would prefer to be reading a book or sleeping or anything other than what they were supposed to be doing. The DJ was pretty good for the first two or three days but then he played the same songs over and over and over for the entire week. The dance floor in the club area was pretty much empty the entire time due to his song selection. There were plenty of people in the club who would have loved to dance if only he didn't keep clearing the floor with his music choices. Housekeeping seemed like he did not want to do his job. We kept finding our stuff as well as the remote for the TV made into the bed under the sheets and blankets. He left the massive stack of itineraries in our room all week long. After sleeping in one day we called housekeeping to come make up our room and bring a few towels, but they said they would not come when we needed them but would only come during certain hours. I loved it they played movies on the deck but I did not like having to choose between watching said movie or choosing one of the other few events they may have actually had going on. This is the first cruise that I've had to negotiate tips on. But customer service simply took away 100% of the tips instead of adjusting to a lower percentage. They did not ask what went wrong nor did they ask how they can make it better in the future. It seems like they neither cared for my experience nor their staff. I was also put off by the amount of maintenance being done while there were large crowds around. Fixing steps and painting and just the massive amount of caution tape should have been handled during night hours while all of the people were sleeping but instead they chose to do it on the deck was most full. As pretty as it was it was something like a labyrinth and was hard to find certain things. The places they chose to take pictures were horrible and completely in the way of the promenade which is where everything on the ship was located. The portrait background looked extremely old and worn out so we chose not to take any pictures. Basically it will be very unlikely that I will be back on a Carnival ship anytime soon unless it's free.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
It was hit or miss. Brunch was fantastic and I loved tea time.

Onboard Activities

1 out of 5
There was nothing to do 80% of the time. Trivia is not fun after the 1st 2 times. Balls and string and sticks with caution tape don't make for good deck games.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The shows were great aside from the bare bottoms I had to see. But after that, there was no entertainment. How much trivia can a person do?

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
They pretty much looked like they didn't want to be there. There was a female bartender from St. Lucia and a male sandwich maker from India who were so kind everyday.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Very pretty and clean

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Everything creaked horribly loud and yes, more than the ships I'm used to.

Ship tip

They need a new cruise director and a 75% new crew. Then it might be great. I was in good company so I had fun and the ports were great but this is the first time I looked forward to getting off the ship.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

5 out of 5
I love cruising out of this port. It is so much more convenient to drive to from Atlanta. The staff is very friendly. Checking in only took about five minutes. Getting off of the boat and getting through customs only took about 15. Smooth in and smooth out this is my preferred port

Grand Turk Island

5 out of 5
Everything is right on the beach so there was no need to take a taxi or book any excursions. Absolutely beautiful and jack shack which is down the beach has really good food.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

5 out of 5
We did not make it on this trip due to weather but I know that it's a beautiful port from the last time I went

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
I absolutely love this island and would live here if I could. Rather than booking an expensive excursion, I suggest renting a car and touring the island on your own. It is absolutely breathtaking. But if you did not want to rent a car, you can take a water taxi to downtown Phillipsburg for $7 and you will have not only the beach but plenty of shopping and good food as well.
