like IAMMEE said, the book is better. Just google the differences between both and you will see. If you have an emergency outside the US, you will need the book.

If you have both take both. The full book is like an insurance policy, should you need to fly home early from a cruise. But you can leave it in the cabin safe right after the cabins open until the day as you disembark (along with your driver's license). The card is much easier (& waterproof) to take with you in to the ports in your wallet or phone case.

**Correction**. Passport is better than just a birth certificate.

Passport book. While the card is better than just a passport, if you have an emergency and need to return to the US, options are limited with the card.

Passport book. If the cruise is canceled mid cruise, you will need to contact the US Embassy to have a book issued so you can get a flight home. Most travel insurance will not cover the cost of the new passport book either. You cannot fly home from a foreign port with a passport card
