Not needed but recommend, if you can do so. Needed if you get left (pier runners) LOL or have an emergency/accident.

I would never travel internationally without a passport. As stated, if the unforeseen ever occurs, it would very difficult to fly back to the States. Spend the money and consider it travel insurance.

You can use a certified birth certificate and a state ID if you are US CITIZEN if you don’t want a passport you can get a passport card which is good on cruises and I believe land crossings in Mexico and Canada 🇨🇦 I think it’s around $55.00

Its not required but I highly recommend a passport book, not a passport card or just a birth certificate. Although its unlikely I would miss the ship, inforunate things do happen,,,injury,illness,who knows. It would be much less of a hassle to get a flight if u already have a passport book. Otherwise, a trip to the nearest U.S. embassy and possibly an extended delay as.the costs.pile up.
