Review summary

The Carnival Ecstasy is FAR from upscale and does not advertise it that way (which is a good thing). But, it is a good beginner's cruise experience. Our ocean view cabin was roomy enough, had ample storage space, and had a nice shower. However, the toilet seat was cheap/flimsy, and there was no hair dryer. Our room had noises (not from passengers) and lacked a minifridge. The porthole was a very nice size.

The formal evening entertainment often included comedians (mostly R-rated) and Karaoke (in a too small but nice room with a bar). Passengers had a party-like atmosphere every night in the central bar area (atrium). The gym was not used by very many people, which is too bad because it is very nice (along with a sauna and a steam room).

The Main Dining room was actually a high point. This sit down restaurant had a very efficient hostess, a nice menu, and exceptionally friendly reliable servers. Our two main Server Teams were excellent. Kudos to Mr Setyawan's team, as well as that of Mr Mirza! In sharp contrast were the very unimpressive Lido buffet areas, The selections were limited, and lines were often long and slow. The Pizza section was tiny, and the pizzas were a real disappointment. The Deli area next to it was far better. A nice feature was the pour-your-own beer option. Finally, the room service menu selections are very limited and ordinary (though delivery is quick).

Nassau is a nice stop, but why is Freeport such a popular stop for cruise ships? And all stops include jewelry stores, especially Diamonds International. Many cruises offer discounts to these and exaggerate the advantages of tax free and duty free. Do not believe that this means you will get a great bargain.

Finally, and most importantly = the staff. They easily outweighed any dissatisfactions we might have had. Restaurant staff could not have been more patient, friendly, and respectful. Housekeeping staff always greeted you in the hallways, and Guest Services staff were quick to answer all inquiries.

Overall, then, we enjoyed our basic beginner's cruise.
