Review summary

Confirmed the smell is still on the Dream but that wasn't nearly the worst part.  When embarking from NOLA (boarding time was 1:00PM)our bags had not shown up at our cabin at 5:00PM even though there were bags outside adjacent cabins.  I checked with Customer Service who told me to check the pile of bags that were missing tags and it was still early.   6:00 went by and still no bags and I returned to customer service who me it was early and to come back if the bags had not shown up by 8:00pm.  This took a little leap of faith since we have now left the dock.  Return to Customer Service at 8:15PM - still no bags.  They didn't seem concerned and took a description of the bags to send to housekeeping to investigate (imagine the prospect of a 7 night cruise with only the clothes on you back).  At 9:30PM, we heard bags being dropped off outside our room....FINALLY right??  Opened the bags to find that someone had gone through the luggage and removed some of our clothes and personal items!!  We had done some shopping in NOLA before the cruise and they took a number of new items as well as used clothes and personal items.  Immediately reported this to Customer Service who treated us like idiots and asked if we had forgotten the items at home or in the hotel....a pair of shoes maybe, but over 20 different items?  We had to file a report and have OUR CABIN searched and be told there wasn't much they could do and they hoped we had insurance.  After expressing our displeasure at the lack of concern by the staff, we provided a detailed description of the items which they said they would distribute to the housekeeping staff....but they can't look in bags or even closets so unless the items were laying around on the floor or furniture....

Very disappointing that no police report was filed and very little effort was made to investigate and locate our items.

Word of warning - even though Carnival asks you to check your bags unlocked I wouldn't....horrible experience to start the cruise.

There are dishonest people everywhere... actually work with some. I agree with Brendariffe I'm sure it was another passenger. Maybe your luggage was delivered to the wrong room and they just nosed through it and helped themselves. Sad this happens. Very sorry. The last few cruises we've handled our own luggage after our luggage wheel on one piece and handle on other were damaged. Somewhat of a hassle but most definitely a better feeling about our things. Has taught us to pack a bit lighter.

Thank you for the support for the people that actually understood what happened.  For the couple of posters that are accusing me of looking for handouts or complaining I hope that you actually spend a few moments of your precious time to actually consider what happened here and read the post.  It is a warning to other, and as some have actually provided some well thought out comment to assist other passengers, which was the intent of this post, lock your luggage and be aware that someone might take your bags and help themselves.

I think the problem wasn't the luggage being delivered. It was that another passenger took it and helped themselves to the contents. I have never had this problem, thank goodness. We do try to check frequently at our door to see if luggage has arrived and grab it quickly. We also tie big ribbons to our luggage to distinguish it as ours. I have often wondered about this happening. I am sorry it happened to you. It isn't good how Carnival treated you. We have cruised many times with Carnival and love it. I have to say that they aren't great in the customer service/problem solving side though.

Anthony 40... Right on. Let's see. $700. worth of stuff stolen. Think he asked for a free cruise or 25 free dinners in the steakhouse?? There is always one on every cruise. Love Carnival and the Dream.😎😎

Amazing my encounter with porters last 2 maybe 3 minutes total. They grab bags, stick out their hand, I put money they leave, bags are just fine when I get them.

tolondon2012    8 years ago

I think i am gonna get a TSA lock... The porters in Nola are contractors, and are a little sketchy. The porter was asking personal info and to see my cruisemate documents. She refused and porter got very angry. BAG arrived damage, and missing perm luggage tags.

linusre    8 years ago

Always lock my luggage. If they need to open they either have the TSA key or can come get me.

This is exactly the reason I always lock our suitcases. If carnival feels it necessary to look in them they can come and get me!! We always wait to make sure that our luggage is put on the carts for the ship when the porters take them too.

I booked that cruise in june 2017

I have been on different cruiselines they all smell because of the closed in surroundings. But the smell doesn't last. So very sorry your first day is awful. Hope the rest of the cruise is great.

I just got off the Dream on a7 day cruise. @ HighSeaRobbery I have to agree some parts on the ship did smell like a sewer, but it wasn't all the time I thought may be I had walked into a fart or something. And our lugguage took longer this time to arrive than in the past. We got it around 6:00 and all of our belongings were in tact. Now it did rain before we took off so a lot of peoples luggage got wet. 2 of my roommates luggage with some of their clothing was damp. But guest services took care of everything. I love Carnival and will sail again, no complaints other than some places were Freezing, that's why I brought my jacket ...lol!!!

It didn't happen to me last cruise, but there were 5 people whose luggage never showed up at all. I pack less and carry on my luggage now. Just easier all the way around.

Any hope for security cameras in the hallway?

Dusty1117    8 years ago

Was correcting didn't finish my thought. Who is to blame. That is a hard one. Feel they were stalling you hoping passenger would report it. I know I'm told to watch where my suitcase is placed so I know it's in the right area for delivery. I have fttf so i'll see how long it takes to get my suitcase delivered. I've already taken my suitcases off cart and taken to my room.

Dusty1117    8 years ago

Was on Valor last Feb. We came back after leaving port to find another persons suitcase in our room. Bag was picked up.With over 3000 suitcases coming on board, suitcases are bound to end up not in right room. If it were yours, you would be upset. Carnival They won't tell you where they found it.

We were on the August 28 sailing of the Dream, and we had a good time, but there was definitely a sewage smell all week.

HighSeaRobbery    8 years ago

Oh, and the "few items of clothes" read the post, it was more than clothes and the total cost of items taken was over $700....

HighSeaRobbery    8 years ago

The smell was on deck 2 Aft.  Faint or not it is not pleasant walking the hallway to your room that smells like a sewer.  As for your comments Anthony40, please read the post.  It was a passenger, not an employee.  The post is a warning to others, not a complaint.  I have contacted corporate and very little has been done.  I was not looking for "freebies", I wanted my stuff back.  We spent a couple days in NOLA prior to the cruise and had purchased some unique items to bring home.  Your bags are entrusted to the cruise line when you hand them over to the porters and in my case someone took my bags (both of them) to their room, went through them top to bottom and took whatever they felt like taking.  It was afterwards we found out from customer service that baggage delivery was reported as complete by 6:00PM.  I would like to know how you would feel if you opened your bags after waiting for 3 hours wondering if they had been left shoreside only to find out you had been robbed.

Please contact corporate with this info! Hopefully they'll be more helpful than the staff on board.

That stinks about your luggage, is the smell in certain areas or everywhere
