The ship looked as if it had recently been refurbished. The Destiny looks very updated in colors of dark brown and blue. If you have been on cruises before, this boat is not as nice as Princess/Royal Caribbean; however, it definitely comes close. We chose Carnival because they have tended to be more of a "fun ship" with more activities and a younger crowd. Same goes with this ship-many fun activities, cruise director was great, staff was very attentive even in less popular areas of the ship.
Ship experiences
Food and Dining
3 out of 5
Food was good-we had late dining at 8:30. We were happy that they seated us with people our age and with people we had things in common with. They did run out of dessert one evening, and served us ice cream cake which we weren't too thrilled about, but that was our only negative experience.
Entertainment
5 out of 5
Activities were great. The ship always had deck parties. Shows at night were good--we weren't too impressed with the lady singer and note that she is the only one that sings in the shows, but the dancers and the male singer were great. Great costumes, etc. Comedy shows were also fun!
Service and Staff
5 out of 5
The staff was great-very attentive. On our day at sea, we were in a secluded place on the boat, and the waitors were always around asking us if we needed anything.
Ship Quality
3 out of 5
Ship not as nice as a Royal Caribbean or Princess cruise boat, but came close. Ship is older, but looks like it has been renovated. Great color scheme-blues and browns. Staff was constantly cleaning the ship. The only area I would recommend improvement on is the public restrooms later during the evening.
Cabin / Stateroom
5 out of 5
We had an oceanview stateroom. Room was very spacious compared to the other ships we have been on. Stateroom steward was AWESOME! Our room was very clean every day and the steward turned down our bed with chocolates every night. We also had towel animals almost every evening. Cute!
We took a taxi to Palm Beach.Saved about $45 dollars total. Palm Beach has great watersports, and a beautiful beach. We would highly recommend this beach. Lounge chairs are $8 and umbrellas are $15. Tried the restaurant on the pier-The Lazy Lizard. Great appetizers and drinks. Went back to the ship to change, and went out in Orangestad. We went to Iguana Joes, Carlos and Charlies. There is another bar right in between them that is a Latin Bar that has $2 Happy Hour drinks. Carlos and Charlies-a must see-definite good time. Eat at Iguana Joes-great food.
Beware: All shore excursions are an hour and a half drive up a very curvy mountain overlooking cliffs. If we knew this, we would have stayed on the boat. (we went to Twin Falls and River Tubing) Island is very primitive. Not worth the time.
We went to Magen's Bay and Paradise Point. Would highly recommend this shore excurison, but go on your own. It would have saved us about $50. Magen's Bay is one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Paradise point=don't miss this. Beautiful scenery and restaurant on top of the mountain. Try the Bushwacker drink!
We went to the Barbados Beach Carnival. Advice: Take a taxi there, it's much cheaper than the shore excursion and you don't have to wait in line and be on a hot bus with 50 other people. Barbados has the most beautiful beaches we have ever seen. The sand is like powder and the water is crystal clear. We will definitely be back to Barbados again.
