Review summary

As far as Carnival goes this boat was nicer than the other two times we gave them a shot.  That is to say the boat itself was "nicer".  For mandatory tipping and having paid for a suite the crew (other than wait staff) was just good enough.  Half of the evening shows were good the other half (especially the country show) were horrible.  I swear some big shot in NYC or MIA knew the boat would be made up of at least 50% from TX, OK, MS, AL and thought they would poke fun at good folks who like country.

I could never finish a meal in the dining room (not from size but quality), although the Indian, Burrito and Burger places on Lido were good.

When my son heard that we are forced to tip the kids club staff, he was horrified and mentioned they don't do anything other than stand at the entry and complain how loud or crazy it was in there.  He was in the "sharks" group, my daughters group had more structured activities.   Although, both kids enjoyed being in the clubs.

Rude patrons don't acknowledge your existence and save lido deck chairs even though they never come back for hours on end.  I would think the cruise line would prefer a customer who will pay for drinks sitting in chair rather than an empty chair.

Our cruise had some weather problems, but Carnival did a good job handling the rebooking of excursions and communicating what was going on.  On the other hand, there were some less than classy patrons who became very angry and rude to both other patrons and especially the Carnival staff.  In my experience on differing cruise lines this (other patrons lowering the overall experience of the cruise) has happened more on Carnival than other lines, just my experience though.

Entertainment

They need to stop the entertainers from doing Country and just let the band perform a country set. I found it to be rude.

There was space for a pull down bed, but it did not have it. The bathroom was great. Some of the drawers and cabinets were pretty beat up/hard to open and close. I liked that they had live television to watch as the family was getting ready.

Ship tip

I will not sail on another Carnival cruise but as far as Carnival ships goes this was the nicest of the 4 I have been on.

Ports of call

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

The Lost Mayan Adventure park was amazing for all the ages in our group. Water slides, lazy river, pools and ZIP LINING all in one place. It is only 5 minutes from the port. Book the earliest start time possible as you can't do the whole place. Also, be sure to stop and get your picture wristband as you come in, there are lots of photo opportunities at a fair price; you just want a magic like band. The port itself here is very friendly and nice. There were plenty of places to eat and have a drink. There was a great pool/beach area in the shopping center. If I didn't have the little kids on this trip I could have stayed in the port the whole day. They appear to also be building a dolphin encounter at the port. The whole port is new.

Cozumel, Mexico

5 out of 5
We came into the new port and there were 9 ships in town this day. I was pleased with how well the locals handle such a large number of people. If you are not docked near downtown do not worry about leaving the port area except with your excursion. We did the Royal Dolphin Encounter at Chakabah beach. Beware this location (in addition to the several hundred you'll pay for the family to do the excursion) will not let you take your own photos and then wants to charge you $240 for the photo package, we settled on $120 so negotiate. Good to note the pictures were a good quality. Also if you book one of the excursions with multiple activities here, be sure that you have more than a half day on the island otherwise you will pay for activities you cannot complete, now that is because you get a TON of time in the dolphin experience

amathew13,  I understood you 1000%  Nowhere did you say they were "Low Class"   you said they were "less then classy".  Acting "Classy" has nothing to do with income or wealth,  it is just good manners and upbringing.  It seams Terri1962 did not read or understand what you said.

Thank you for the review.

Luckily for you there are plenty of other cruise lines for you to take cruises.  Hope that your next cruise meets or exceeds your expectations.

amatthew13 - I know exactly what you meant. I seem to remember a quickly devolving thread involving this subject a year or so ago :)

Although they don't sail out of Galveston, you may find Princess or Celebrity more to your liking. (HAL, NCL and RCI might also be good, but I have not sailed on them. Disney also sails from Galveston, but might be too costly).

Terri posted a comment and I wanted to apologize if I came across as defining lower class patrons as those in an interior state room or of a different socioeconomic background than I.  This is hardly the case.  I meant that other patrons who were either rude to me, my family, other patrons or the cruise staff (and I mean I saw some really rude people who barely acknowledge the existence of anyone else) are low class individuals.  Meaning they have very little "class".  So for any others who may read this please know I what I mean.
