Review summary

A good break, but far from our favorite cruise. Overall, we were disappointed in service and ship conditions. MedallionNet did not work the first dat and it took us 24 hours to rectify problems with the MedallionClass app.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
We had assistance required check in and we kept getting handed off to 3 different people. Each time we had to answer all the check In questions and pictures. Add that to an ADA restriction and it was an exhausting process.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
We were supposed to each have two different specialty dining. Princess oversold this benefit and even though we started trying to make reservations when we booked, we were never able to book anything. Food in the MDR and buffet was adequate, but forgettable.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Again, most tastings were overbooked and unavailable.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The Bravo show , Diva show, and Tom Briscoe (comedian) we’re all great. The Broadway Ballroom show was not what we expected. It wasn’t Broadway or Ballroom. Mostly just a collection of New York and New Jersey songs.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Toilets were acting up. Already mentioned that many events were overbooked. Our safe had a low battery and wouldn’t lock. So we were forced to hide our valuables. We contacted service 3 X and it wasn’t fixed during the cruise. One of the bathroom lights was blinking on and off. It was fixed within about 24 hours. The room steward was very good and was able to rapidly help us with my wife’s ADA needs. The ship itself displayed a lot of rust. The windows in the public areas were extremely dirty and kind of ruined the views from those areas. There was a large electrical box on the deck with the aft swimming pool that was corroded hanging loose (picture). Clearly a safety hazard. We utilized the EZCheck luggage service which transfers your bags directly to the airport and on to your final destination. We didn’t see any charge in the documentation, but had $25 a bag charged to the room in our account summary. They also only delivered 1 oh 2 luggage tags requested and it took 3 trips to guest services to finally get the second tag at 11 PM. I think this cruise takes the blue ribbon for the most time I spent in the guest services line. We expected a lot better from Princess, but I think their older ships don’t get the same level of service an care as their newer ships.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
This ship design is not conducive to movement. I found that I often had to move up or down a level .

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
This stateroom was not what we selected. It was on the starboard side, R743, and the one we had selected was on the port side, R742. R743 has a massive air intake outside next to the veranda. It was so noisy that we couldn’t use it except for a couple of minutes at a time..so this is essentially an ocean view stateroom. Room was clean, but relatively small. We had to have the steward remove a small table to get enough room to move somewhat freely.

Ship tip

Lower your expectations.

Ports of call

Princess Cays (Cruise Line Private Island)

2 out of 5
Tender to the port with a scooter ( motor wheelchair) was treacherous. Rocky, crowded beach and not ADA friendly. Buffet was not very good. When leaving we noticed that the beaches to the right of the tender mooring were almost empty. Everyone…including us, all followed the crowd to the left.

Amber Cove (Puerto Plata), Dominican Republic

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Excursion to the El Younqe rainforest was great!

Grand Turk Island

Ft. Lauderdale (Port Everglades), Florida

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We used the post cruise excursion and airport transfer. One of our best decisions.
