Getting an EHIC/GHIC is free and is often something insurers require, and the UK Government actually recommend having both.

@MidsCouple. I'd have thought talking about insurers made it clear I meant a GHIC/EHIC and travel insurance but clearly some people need everything spelled out for them...

In the UK, EHIC has been replaced by the GHIC, Global Health Insurance Card. Neither are usable in Norway anyway and neither replace travel insurance which is a far more important policy to have. You can use a UK passport to get medically necessary healthcare in Norway e.g. emergency treatment but you’ll still pay which is why insurance is important. .

Joecruises. The government do not advise having both because GHIC is a replacement for EHIC, it’s not something that runs alongside it. If someone has a valid EHIC, they can still use it in the countries in which it applies but when it expires they’d need to replace it with a GHIC.
