Listen to the daily forecast and dress appropriately. Take your sunscreen and a bottle of water with you whenever you leave the ship. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. It is available up to the point you board the bus. Let staff know of your needs in advance of going ashore.
It is hot and humid in most of these ports. Be sure to plan for this. Bring a hat and sunscreen. The tours and ship provide water. The information given about what to wear to visit the temples was conflicting. Be prepared with clothes to cover your shoulders and legs.
Tell people to not bring any kind of pocket knife on board. They confiscated (but returned upon disembarkation with some confusion) my husband's that he has been taking on board other cruises for many years. It has a few gadgets--is just a standard Swiss army knife--not a large blade or anything.
If you fancy getting into a speciality restaurant try to do so soon after getting on the ship as they are popular. Always go to the Azamazing Evening, everyone I've been on has been fabulous.
If there's the slightest problem or wish, let Guest Relations know asap and all will be made perfect.
For dining, be seated where you want, alone or with others; order what you want, including second helpings of faves; eat as slowly or as fast as you want. If you go to the same table with the same servers, you can have standing orders for any allergies or food/drink preferences you have.
For those that wander around with a plate of food from the buffet looking for a place to sit, grow up and ask to sit with others and enjoy the company.
Bring a backpack. It was nice to shop and go to the beaches and have an easy way to transport your sunscreen and beach gear. St. Barth's was by far the best island we visited. Very upscale. Antigua had the most beautiful beach (Dickerson's) but felt the island was very poor. Would not go solo.
Make sure you look at the available tours before leaving home. This will help you decide what to pack. Azamara does not require formal attire but business casual in the dining room after 6PM. Wine is provided for lunch and dinner, ships choice but you can ask for the previous night's wine.
