Review summary

Nice transatlantic cruise with Azamara. Excellent food and service, small ship atmosphere. The weather got very windy towards the end of the cruise which made things somewhat less comfortable, but few people complained.

Cabin / Stateroom

Cabin nice and clean with a good size balcony. Very nice linens, towels, etc. Bathroom is small, especially the shower.

Ship tip

This is a smaller ship that caters mostly to adults. Entertainment was fine, as long as you don't expect Broadway type shows.

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Buzios, Brazil

Nice small town that seems to cater mostly to South American tourists. We booked a boat tour with a local company. Inexpensive, but don't expect english speaking staff.

Salvador De Bahia, Brazil

Worth visiting the historic town.

Mindelo, Cape Verde Island

A taste of Africa but visited quite a bit by Europeans. Took a taxi ride around the island. Very little greenery but nice scenery nonetheless.

Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands

Walked around town and also took the tram to go to San Cristobal, a world heritage site.

Santa Cruz De La Palma, Canary Islands

Hired a taxi for a two-hour ride to tour the area ad go to the volcano national park. Well worth the 60 euro charge.

Funchal, Madeira Did not visit port

Weather got quite windy and the captain chose to bypass this port.

Lisbon, Portugal

Stayed for three days at the end of the cruise. Very picturesque city. Forget about taking the historic Tram 28 mentioned in all tourist guides. Overcrowded and just not worth it. Instead walk around the Alfama, center, and Bairro Alto districts and/or hire a taxi or Tuktuk. Taxi fares are metered and very reasonable. We never tried the Tuktuks. We actually took a 'free' walking tour (tip expected), which started at 10am from Praça Luis de Camoes and thoroughly enjoyed it. Only issues in Lisbon: Tourist indications are generally poor and taxis at the port are unmetered and a complete rip-off.

Information from the ship was that "taxis are available" at the cruise port. Unfortunately these were not the regular black and green metered taxis but rather unregulated (mafia operated?) taxis that will heist unsuspecting visitors. Unaware of this, we ended up being charged 60 euros for a ride that should have cost less than 8 euros. What an upsetting welcome to the city we got!
