This was the most disappointing cruise we've ever been on. All our excursions were cancelled due to weather, and it was cold and windy most of the time. While we'd like to go back to the Bahamas someday, we will never cruise there in December again. We spent most of our time on the ship but there were lots of things to do, and all of the staff were wonderful.
Embarkation

The Royal Caribbean bus picked up at a different terminal than we were told to go to from our hotel. We wandered around the terminal for a while and couldn't find a Royal Caribbean representative. The unfriendly staff at the airport welcome center told us they didn’t work for the cruise lines and couldn't tell us where the usual pick up was. We called the person who’d confirmed our transport the day before, and Royal Caribbean sent the bus and the representative to our terminal. I'm not sure if that would have happened if we hadn’t called, and I'm glad we were able to push redial and reconnect. However, check-in at the port was super smooth and fast. It was honestly the best port check-in we've ever experienced, and if you exclude the airport pickup, this would definitely be five stars. Our cabin was ready by 1:00 as promised, and we didn't wait very long for our luggage to arrive.

Food and Dining
4 out of 5
MAIN DINING: Main dining food was excellent, as always. We never made reservations for MyTime dining, and our wait time to be seated was never more than ten minutes.
WINDJAMMER: The Windjammer was only open until 8:30 in the evening. We were extremely unhappy we could not get a soft drink at the Windjammer without purchasing a beverage package, and no dispenser will work without a special beverage package cup. We rarely drink more than one soft drink per day between us, so it wasn’t worth it to purchase a package. We were also irritated that we couldn’t just fill up a water bottle with water - the water dispensers on the soft drink machines will not work without the special drink package cup, and we couldn’t fill a water bottle at the water dispenser due to the health warnings advising us not to fill our water bottles there. We ended up filling my daughter's water bottle by getting several plastic cups from the 4th floor, filling them with water, and then filling the water bottle from the cups. I noticed some guests asking the waiters in main dining to fill their water bottles, but the mouth on my daughter's bottle wouldn't have accommodated the ice cubes. The Windjammer was frequently out of bananas and Froot Loops and it’s not clear why these popular items weren’t regularly restocked since we weren't at sea for more than two days at a time.
The "Wash Your Hands" song has been a running joke in our family for a long time because we started cruising with our daughter when she was small and she used to sing it at home. I'm glad that they've set things up at the Windjammer so it's not an option to avoid handwashing. Silas from Brazil was at the entrance to the Windjammer every day to sing the song and make people smile as they were washing their hands.
The Windjammer food was as outstanding as we've come to expect. I honestly don't know how they manage to create such a variety of food that always tastes good, all day long.
SOFT-SERVE ICE CREAM: The free soft-serve small ice cream cones near the pool were only available until 6:00, so we couldn’t enjoy our usual after-dinner ice cream runs. I was glad they had a person dispensing the cones when it was open to avoid the mess from the kids and help keep illness from spreading.
ROOM SERVICE: Royal Caribbean has eliminated the hang tags for room service. We could see what’s available on the television or on a printed list, but we had to call in the order. This is probably easier for Royal Caribbean, but it’s not easier from a guest’s perspective because we couldn't double check what we ordered, and it wasn't clear if the person answering the phone had understood the order. However, we did receive everything we ordered the one time we used the service.
BAR EXPERIENCE: There was no pina colada mix available in the bar that also served as our muster station after we boarded, but it was restocked by noon. The drink mix in the drink I received was extremely watered down (no pina colada taste at all). I didn’t say anything because we were due to go up to our cabin in a short while, it was really crowded by that time with everyone waiting to go to their rooms, and the waiters were really harried at that point. However, it happened again when I ordered a drink in the theatre. I sent that one back and asked for another, and it was cheerfully replaced. At $14 a drink, I think they should all be mixed in a standard way. The Bionic bar is interesting to watch but it was frequently down for maintenance.

I wrote extensively about the Windjammer in my general review. My overall experience was positive. The food is good, and the staff is excellent.

Onboard Activities
5 out of 5
BINGO: The Bingo jackpots were great, with generous prizes ranging from $490-$1,300, and most of the prizes weren't split. It was difficult to get a good seat unless you arrived an hour early (and that wasn’t enough by day 7). We would have preferred a coverall so that the event lasted longer.
CUPCAKE DECORATING: The cupcake decorating class was fun, and we highly recommend it. The class was changed to a different location from the one shown on our app, and the new location wasn't pushed out to the app. We asked one of the staff members about it after we noticed no one else had arrived and were redirected to the new location. (It's a good thing we always arrive early.) The class started a little late and ran a little over, but it worked out OK for us. (This wasn't the first issue we had with the app. All of our boarding passes, health questionnaires, and most charges were assigned to only one member of our party.)
SEA PLEX: Sea Plex is a really nice place for all ages, and families can have fun there. We loved the bumper cars and were happy the attendant was proactive and removed some teens who refused to follow the safety rules after being warned.
NAPKIN FOLDING: We really enjoyed the napkin folding class. I think we learned four different ways to fold a napkin.

The staff was very efficient and helpful. We had some unassigned photos, and the staff member located them and transferred them to our account very quickly. I wish there was a way to order these through the app or the television to avoid the crowds.

Lots of fun activities for the whole family. We used the bumper cars. There can be a bit of a wait, and they are only open for limited hours.

We were there to wait for an excursion (before finding out it was cancelled) and for a Bingo event. Some of the seats dipped down further than others. Overall, it was nice.

All of our Bingo events were here except for one, and we watched a jazz band play here as well. It was a nice venue.

There were no children in our party.
Service and Staff

DINING: We chose MyTime dining and had the pleasure of sitting with Dinesh/Nitin, Evelyn/Anak, and Nereo/Sagar. All were awesome. We missed having breadsticks at dinner and asked about them the first night. Our server told us Royal Caribbean hadn’t served breadsticks since the pandemic, but head waiter Valeriano made a lot of them appear. We were very impressed. Head waiter Vasant was also super helpful and kind.
CABIN: Our cabin attendant, Jolistor, was wonderful. He went out of his way to make us happy every day. He also made an effort to work with our schedule, and we really appreciated that.
BINGO: Raymond from South Africa ran the Bingo games, and he was entertaining and funny.
OVERALL: I have nothing but unreserved praise for every single Royal Caribbean employee we interacted with on this cruise. They were all awesome.
Ship Quality
5 out of 5
The ship was clean and beautiful.
Our cabin showed some wear. There was a missing stop for the toilet seat on the wall, a missing rubber plug on the bottom of the toilet seat, and chipped paint around the shower drain. We noticed similar wear and tear type issues through the ship, but all of it was minor.
The elevators would occasionally miss selected floors or unexpectedly change direction, which was a little frustrating when we were trying to go somewhere.

STORAGE: We liked the amount of storage space in the cabin and bathroom, which was sufficient for three adults. (I didn't even need to bring out my shoe holder for extra storage.) There were five drawers, two closets, nightstands with storage, a narrow storage area under the television, and cupboards above the bed.
BALCONY: I thought the balcony was small. There was only room for two chairs and a very small round table. There was no room for a lounge chair (and relaxing in a lounge chair and enjoying the weather and view is one of my favorite things to do on a cruise). It didn't matter on this cruise because it was either raining, windy, or chilly the entire time.
OUTLETS: We were happy to see an extra plug outlet near the bed in addition to the plugs in the vanity area.
SHOWER: The spacious shower magically seemed to keep the steam inside as long as the shower was short. The body wash was watery, and the toilet paper seemed thinner than the stuff we use in our RV.
MISCELLANEOUS: We had a hot water pot, but there was no coffee or tea provided. I did have a couple cups of tea because I brought extra tea bags back from the dining room.
There were no life preservers in the cabin.
Ship tip
Make MyTime reservations as early as possible if you'd like to avoid a wait.
We didn't really see much of the port, but the people helping us with luggage, etc. were really nice and helpful during our embarkation and disembarkation.
We arrived late. The captain said that we were delayed because of the rough seas near Cape Hatteras, which he said are always an issue in December. At first, we were told we would arrive at 2:00, then at 6:00 (with no one allowed to leave), and then we were told we would arrive at 3:00. ALL shore excursions were cancelled and refunded, so we missed seeing the Kennedy Space Center. It was interesting that we were able to return to New Jersey exactly on time traveling the same route (including an emergency medical helicopter evacuation to slow us down) but were unable to get to Port Canaveral on time for anyone to enjoy their shore excursions.
Giving the benefit of the doubt to Royal Caribbean for the late arrival, and knowing that Royal Caribbean cannot control the weather, I think the crew could have done a better job. No one from the ship bothered to tell us there is absolutely nothing located at Port Canaveral, that we would have to pay for transportation to go to the city, or that the number of transports were limited. It was very windy, making the 60-degree temperature seem much colder. Because anything of interest was a few miles away and it was too miserable to walk, most of the people who got off the ship tried to re-board right away. The line to get back onto the ship moved very slowly and often stopped for minutes at a time, and it seemed that it was because the security staff was disorganized.
We generally don’t like visits to any of the cruise line-owned islands because it seems like a price-gouging opportunity and cruises are already expensive enough. Coco Cay appeared to us to be nothing more than a kid-focused, overpriced waterpark. Since we weren't traveling with children, it wasn't all that attractive to us.
It was in the 60s and very windy the day we arrived, so we didn't go to the beach. We had a zipline experience scheduled but it was canceled due to the wind. We were told that if we came back in the afternoon, we would go to the front of the line since we had made a reservation ahead of time. It was still windy in the afternoon, so we didn't go back. The zipline tickets were refunded.
Obviously, Royal Caribbean can't do anything about the wind. We ended up staying on the ship all day, and while it was disappointing to have another excursion cancelled due to weather, our beautiful ship was a lovely place to be.
Honestly, the main reason we scheduled this cruise was to have the chance to go to Pig Island, but this excursion was canceled because Royal Caribbean staff said the water was too rough to land near the island. We were offered the opportunity to spend the day on the second beach we were supposed to visit as part of the excursion, but we declined because the morning weather was cold and rainy and spending time sitting at a beach didn't seem very desirable.
The weather improved a bit in the afternoon, and we got the chance to walk around Nassau and do a bit of shopping for a couple of hours. The store selection wasn't all that great, but they did have the usual stores (Diamonds International, etc.).
Disembarkation was very smooth. We were sitting in a bus waiting to go to the airport five minutes before we were scheduled to leave the ship. Customs consisted only of a photo. It was the smoothest and easiest disembarkation we've ever experienced on any cruise.
Thanks for spending the time for such detailed review. Appreciate that. Sorry the weather did not cooperate. Looked like you enjoyed the ship and food anyway.
Thanks for sharing your detailed cruise experience. So sorry that the weather wasn’t better. Just an FYI- you can certainly enjoy Coco Cay without spending any money. The water park is only one small area of the island. There are plenty of places around the island to relax at the beach or around the Oasis Lagoon pool area. There’s also areas for games such as beach volleyball, basketball, etc. as well. There are easily accessible food areas to be able to have lunch or snacks that are all included in your cruise fare. Sounds like you enjoyed your onboard activities. They sounded fun. I was able to fill my water bottle using the plastic cups provided at different water and ice stations (not the freestyle machines) provided around the ship. They don’t want you to just put your refillable water bottle directly under the spigot or ice dispenser for health reasons. It’s strange that you couldn’t order a soda from a crew member in the windjammer. You should be able to order a soda at any food venue and just be charged for it on your seapass card if you don’t have a drink package. I’m curious as to why you didn’t order your room service right on the TV through the room service feature. You said you could see the menu. We were able to do that on our cruise last month. Maybe the system was down when you wanted to order? Sounds like you made the best of your cruise by enjoying the many activities onboard Anthem. I hope that your next cruise or vacation will have beautiful weather!
Thank you for not blaming the ship or line for weather related disappointments. Just so you know the next time you head to the Bahamas that "Pig Island" is adjacent to Exuma Island being a 3-4 hour boat trip from the Nassau area, so it's unlikely the excursion was going to where the famous wild swimming pigs live. More likely you were going to be taken to a small Cay near Pearl Island that features domestic piglets trained to interact with tourists. The "swim w/ pigs" portion often gets cancelled if the weather is too rough or cold for the piglets to be in the ocean. Pro tip for Cape Liberty, Bayonne... if staying within 30 miles of the port a rideshare, taxi, or sometimes even private car service fare will cost less, be more direct, and often more courteous than the cruise line offered airport/port shuttle. Also many Ridgefield Park, North Bergan, and Jersey City, Marriott and Hilton affiliated properties have resumed stay included port shuttles in their sleep-n-cruise packages. Because of the popularity of the shuttle included packages that service the 3 area cruise ports the packages will sell out 3-6 months in advance of sailing date.
Thanks for the outstanding and detailed review. Been on many cruises where the weather was poor at times. FYI, it is best to do research on the port prior, so you know what to expect. Coco Cat has plenty to do for free; the water park is only a small part of it.
