Review summary

Discovered that the mega ships are not for us. Glad to see the hand washing stations at the windjammer. Didn’t care for our excursions we took. I liked the coffee package, enjoyed my iced coffees and other coffee beverages. The staff all around was excellent. Didn’t like the fact you were charged for popcorn but get lobster and shrimp in MDR.

Embarkation

Everything went very smoothly. No issues.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Atmosphere in American Icon was nice. Food was good in MDR. Buffet in Windjammer was good. Staff was quickly clearing tables as soon as people left them. Staff also walked around offering juice, water and coffee.

American Icon Grill

5 out of 5

Excellent all around.

Solarium Bistro

5 out of 5

Better place to get your breakfast. A lot more quiet. No kids.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Only did the North Star. Many deck chairs were “reserved” with no one occupying them but that’s the norm on cruises. Stuck to the Solarium and enjoyed soaking pool and hot tubs. Liked the treadmills in the fitness center.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Enjoyed the comedians. Also enjoyed music in the smaller bars.

Children's Programs

Have no Children

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Excellent service throughout. Only experienced one negative person in pub. Asked what sports channels they had and was answered with a short, curt response.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Somebody was always cleaning hand rails, vacuuming, clearing water from pool decks.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Excellent for 2 people. Always kept spotless.

Ship tip

Prepare for crowded pool areas.

Ports of call

Cape Liberty (Bayonne), New Jersey

5 out of 5
Most well organized place for embarkation.

Port Canaveral, Florida

3 out of 5
Not a favorite. Did 5hr Kennedy Space Center. Realizing it was only 5hrs but was rushed through the exhibits. I think it would have been better to just focus on the highlights instead of rushed through everything. Wound up arriving at the ship late and missed one of our shows because of it.

Perfect Day At Coco Cay, Bahamas

5 out of 5
Just found a place to quietly rest and enjoy the ocean.

Nassau, Bahamas

2 out of 5
Too crowded of a port with many large cruise ships arriving at once with thousands of people disembarking at the same time. Rushed through tour of Nassau couldn’t wait to get back to ship. The port is too small for the number of large ships that arrive.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Everything went smoothly until went to get our luggage and had to search for one of our suitcases. Finally flagged down staff and finally found it placed in the wrong area. The staff member who helped me was very nice though.

I wouldn't rule out the larger ships, they do have their advantages. IMHO, Anthem is not the best of the larger ships. I would recommend trying Freedom or an even larger ship the Oasis class. Of course that would depend what you didn't like about Anthem.
