Review summary

Giving Royal Caribbean 1 more try on Odyssey hoping the entertainment will be favorable to us but pref Disney food and less x-rated shows. Fun without all the F-words, more smart comedy. Crew was super nice and ship was clean even though it was a bigger ship. Details and pictures in review.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

Cafe Promenade

4 out of 5

First I will give you the two items off the menu that I would give five stars. The green and black olive mixture, tomato and cheese appetizer, mushroom appetizer. If you enjoy Disney’s unusual gourmet flavor pizzas you’ll find the standard pizzas offered on Royal Caribbean. The sandwiches were small but standard, although I thought the taste was primarily bread and could be improved more meat or less bread. So if it were not for the appetizers I would’ve given a three star rating.

Main Dining Room

5 out of 5

Very visually appealing, actually a step above Disney. The windows were larger you were able to see outside from anywhere in the dining room. Sometimes the venues in Disney can feel (a little) like a cafeteria if you are in the center. The appetizers, entrées and desserts did not have the imagination, the spark, or the culinary interest needed to try new things. They are all very nice options that you can get at your older upscale mom and pop restaurants at home. You will not be disappointed unless you’re expecting Disney style dinners. If you get the chance to try Chops, and have their shrimp appetizer. But you won’t get the same at Main Dining.

Windjammer Marketplace

3 out of 5

I did like the omelette station and I also felt they had more desserts and bakery then Disney offered. The options for meat and eggs were limited. Two different kinds of scrambled and a hard boil. Standard sausage and bacon. Although the buffet restaurants are basically the same size between Disney and Royal Caribbean, Disney has two long pathways with many options. Windjammers has one on the left followed by a second on the left and likewise for the right side the buffet but limited variety. So if you were smart you’d go toward the head of the ship and get the exact same breakfast as the people who are waiting in line at the entrance of the restaurant. I stayed for the crossover from breakfast to lunch. Hoping that I would find more to eat since I did not care for the breakfast, it was missing those special foods you would get to try on a Disney buffet. It iwas adequate but not anything you could mention to Family later and say “oh I want to go back to the Windjammer for blank blank blank at the buffet. It was a standard mass produced buffet. I love Disney’s strawberry soup.

Onboard Activities

Casino Royale

The smoke wasn’t that bad but if you react to smoke you definitely would notice it. My only complaint is that it was difficult to walk through the machines were rather tight for space when you were trying to walk down the rows. A handicap person with a walker or wheelchair would have great difficulty.

Rock Climbing Wall

5 out of 5

The rock climbing wall entertained the Marine that we had with us. He was able to climb all the way to the top which most people were not able to ring the bell. They had a few impromptu competitions for the rock wall. Our young man enjoyed the additional competitions.

Dunes Mini Golf

5 out of 5

I did not play golf but it looks like a lot of fun it was on two levels and had lots of interesting obstacles.

Art and Photo Gallery

5 out of 5

Once you realize that they change the pictures every day it’s a nice place to stop and see the new works. Each day I seem to have a new favorite or three.

Entertainment

4 out of 5

Lyric Theatre

3 out of 5

Sadly our comedian was all F-word and sex, wasn’t what my parents felt comfortable watching. The hypnotist was very good, I’d give him a five star. One night the show was the 50s review. My parents loved that but it wasn’t my thing I was just glad to see them happy. My daughter and the young man we had with enjoyed more items from studio B.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Our couch was filthy with several different stains obviously not from the same products. We had the bunkbed and the mattress had a gully in the center where I slept. I thank my cabin steward who was kind enough to change the sheets on that bunk mattress for me as the first ones smelled horrible. The next ones were absolutely fine I’m so glad it was not a condition of the room and just those set of sheets. I found the rest of the ships layout and design useful in the common areas were always clean and well-maintained.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The main bedroom was very nice. Our couch in the living room had several stains obviously not from the same products. We had a bunkbed room and the mattresses had a gully in the center where I slept. I thank my cabin steward who was kind enough to change the sheets on that bunk mattress for me as the first ones smelled horrible. The next ones were absolutely fine I’m so glad it was not a condition of the room and just those set of sheets. On our 6 night cruise, we never once had Kleenex available to us. He left us extra glasses when we requested it. And they also left us two navigators for the five of us each day

Ship tip

Try chops you won’t be disappointed.

Tendering was made so handicap would be able to stay on the main floor and not have to do stairs.

Cozumel, Mexico

Offered wheelchairs to take you down the long port for those who had physical difficulties. You are able to tip them as payment it’s your choice.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

The ship said that there would be a tram that would take my parents from the ship to shore but we watched out the window and there was never any tram so we were unable to get out at that port.

Disembarkation

I left with my luggage first thing off the ship, it went super fast anybody concerned about catching an early flight should be able to do it if you get there right away. I left my remaining family of four behind to eat breakfast and meet me at cab stand area with the car we rented. They took very good care of my father who had a cane and did not have him wait in long lines I can’t say enough about how important this is.

I remember disclaimers of adult language and themes. Don't like, don't attend.

That wasn't my experience, had a great time.

Since you are planning another RC cruise, note that you can order some items from the Chops menu in the MDR. RC's mid size ships do not have the separate Sorrento's pizza, which would give you more options than what is available at the cafe Promenade. You should also like the cafe270 and solarium bistro. Basically, the larger the ship the more options there are in food, entertainment and other activities. The family friendly shows (which most are) do not use R-rated material but there are adult shows available (quest anyone?). Remember, Quantum class ships do not have waterslides but make sure to take advantage of the Seaplex. Cruises are great, glad you have found one to enjoy.

What is with all the people being so “offended “ now a days. The cruise ship gives warnings to all the shows. Last time I looked the crew did not tie anyone to the seats and MAKE them attend the shows! Just get up and leave! We hate the profanity also but when we hear it we just leave!

We were on Adventure of the Seas in November and loved it. We saw 2 comedy shows and never heard the F-word. It sounds like you may have attended the late adult comedy show, so that would not be unexpected there.
