Since this was the first port back in USA, you will have to go through immigration. We woke up at 5 AM to watch the boat go under the Golden Gate Bridge and port. We did not get out of the port building until 1 PM. We had to be back by 5 PM. This caused us to have to rush our independent shore excursion.

If you live across the bay, take public transportation to and from the ship. It is so easy and cheap if you have a senior clipper card.

I could have spent more time at Alcatraz and less on bus and shopping.
