Good weather the day we visited, cruise ship free shuttle bus from port to city centre, you can't walk from port due to safety (commercial port). We did our own thing, saved lots of money vs organised and overpriced excursion to an English speaking country. Walked to Te Papa Museum (free entry but small donation recommended also free WIFI), THE MOST amazing ANZAC memorial display in the world, very moving. Natural history display of NZ animals also amazing, they have the only preserved Collosal Squid on display, allow about 1.5 hours. Cable Car was handy to get to the top for the view over Wellington and the harbour. Family ticket $16 return although we walked back down to the bottom, only takes 10 minutes. Then walked back to cruise shuttle pick up point in front of parliament house, easy walk and you see a bit of the city. Lots more to do but we didn't bother, same as any other main city.

A freebie service operates from cruise terminal. We got off at the first stop and walked through the town . You can get the cable car from here for $5 per person. We opted to walk back down through the botanical gardens rather than take the car back down. Went to the Wellington museum which was interesting and free! A walk along the wharf is ideal at lunchtime as there are many restaurants and bars. We went to Portafino Italian restaurant for lunch . I would recommend the minestrone soup it’s the best I’ve ever had. Hubby had a pizza which also was delicious. You can pick up the shuttle bus from where you were dropped . They run every 15 mins

Wellington is a great place to visit and there is a lot to do. If you have a day go the Te Papa Museum (2 hours needed at least), Cuba Street (30 minutes), and get the Cable Car (5 or 6 minutes each way) to the Botanical Gardens (2 hours), Parliament - also called The Beehive (you can do a tour - times vary). Wellington Chocolate Factory has great chocolate and go to Leeds Street Bakery and try the Salted Caramel Biscuit. Wish we had longer.

What is not to like about Wellington, the Botanical Garden and New Zealand in general. I think the friendliest people on the planet live in NZ.

We took a morning tour along "the wild coast". Lovely views, followed by some sheep dog trials and a stupendous morning coffee with cakes, sandwiches, pastries et al. Back to the capital city which is extremely attractive and small enough to be quite manageable by foot. Deciding not to take the cable car journey up into the hills above the city, we went to the harbour area instead. We were well rewarded. About five minutes from the "Beehive" New Zealand's stunning parliament building, the harbour area has been developed sympathetically and is easy on the eye. All manner of water sports were visible in the bay as we took a beer in one of the many cafes and bars on offer. Idealic.

Some of the reviews here astound me. People are either fickle or just daft. It's called Windy Wellington. The weather is in the name... Beautiful city we took a walk around the museums which were beautiful and some of the Islands Maori history and legends are amazing. The tram was an experience too worth trying once. As a massive Lord of the Rings fan a trip to Weta Cave is a must! It's free and the sculpture and details these guys put into the movie props is ridiculous. It is a must see!
