Ship docks at Port Chalmers, bus into Dunedin. Free wi-fi on dock or nearby library. Recommend the Taieri Gorge Railway trip or Speights' Brewery Tour. Make sure you visit the magnificent railway station.

I like Port Charmers and Dunedin. We took the public bus from the port to Dunedin for about $4 and we did the Taieri Gorge railway which was a great day out and also spent time in the town centre, the railway station is wonderful.

Nice little town within close walking distance of the dock. Walk up up to the flagstaff lookout for the fantastic view. Take the shuttle into Dunedin and make sure you visit the station and the cathedral.

We did a non-ship sponsored group tour with about 8 people which was superb. Dunedin was our personal favorite of all the places we saw in New Zealand. The town and area are gorgeous. The University is very nice with some great buildings. The coast is unbelievably spectacular, with very nice beaches (and I lived in Florida for a few years).

We arrived in Dunedin on Christmas Day so we were lucky that places decided to open, there was also a Princess Cruise ship in with 3000 passengers so 8000 people descended on Dunedin on a public holiday so I thought the town coped well. We did the Gorge Train tour and I recommend everyone to do this tour if you can as it was amazing. My tip would be to book through the ship even though it was more expensive as our bus broke down on the way back from the train and we were running late to get back to the ship.

We rented a car and drove to Castle Larnoch on our own in the morning, and had Devonshire tea at the cafe there and walked around the gardens. It was much less expensive for four people than doing the RC excursion which was sold out anyway. The area around the port is beautiful and there a cute little town at the port. Dunedin itself is a largish industrial city where we visited the Cadbury chocolate factory and had very good hot chocolate and complimentary chocolate samples. Bought we are here souvenir at Starbucks.

We stayed in Port Chalmers and were amazed beautiful the town was. We ventured up to all of the towns lookouts with fantastic views of Otago harbour and Harrington Point. If you have the legs to walk up to Centenary Lookout and the Robert Scott Memorial it is definitely worth it. If you don't fancy climbing, a walk to Careys Bay is a lovely, quiet spot away from the business of the town and port. The Careys Bay Historic Hotel is worth a visit. The town itself is relatively small and overlooked by the Iona church, again, worth a visit.

We did not do an excursion. We were blessed with the perfect weather in viewing Milford Sound from our balcony.
