The thing we loved about this 15 day Cruise on the Golden princess was the mix of sea days and a split of ports of call i.e. undeveloped and developed. Alotau was our first destination and is a very charming small village hugging the shores of Milne Bay the site of WWII battles that are commemorated at the memorial to the soldiers of PNG, Australia and other Allies. Milne Bay Province have done this well and it was a pleasant walk of about 2kms from the Ship. The people are friendly and have not yet become too commercialised however they do their best to extract some value from the ships passengers in a non high pressure way and good on them I say, they don’t have much choice to add to their meagre earnings above the daily substance way of life. We opted not to do an excursion but chose to just walk into the town and experience the people. It was hot and humid and rained heavily so I advise a compact umbrella as a good addition to your pack or bag, though the rain was warm and not unpleasant. There are no footpaths so mud everywhere so be warned wear appropriate footwear 😁

Great place to visit for a unique experience. We went to the cultural festival, something quite different. Apply sunscreen, take a bottle of water and wear a hat.

Nice market lovely people, your dollar will go a long way and they need the tourest money to fill the very large pot holes in the roads. The transport is rough and ready and with the roads it's a bumpy ride. Good place to visit once.

Very poor town but we engaged with some young lads to show us around and they were delightful. Very good museum that we enjoyed. People very friendly.
