This port is very much orientated towards the World War II activities in Milne Bay area. We did an excursion which was a private booking, to a local school and also the memorials for the war, and a market as well. All the buses that were provided for the ships excursions and the private excursions are very very old And squashy on board. the locals are friendly and happy to tell you everything about their town. It’s a very poor place though and quite primitive and a little bit of a shock to me even though I thought that I had known about it. I’m glad I’ve been.

I believe this was Oceania's first time stopping in this port. Glad we went but you must be prepared to witness life in a third-world country. Didn't do an excursion here but walked from the port to the local trading center (about half a mile). Witnessed poverty and a lot of discarded trash along the walk. The people were extremely friendly and seemed content. We did not feel threatened. People from the western hemisphere should see how these people live and be thankful for all that we have.

Cultural festival done through ship was about the only thing on offer.It was a Sunday so everything closed.The cultural festival was well worth it.Such beautiful traditional costumes and dancing

I knew this was a third world country & facilities not up to scratch but I didn't realise it would be as smelly & dirty as it was The natives were very friendly & the native village interesting. Not a place I care to go back to

Like almost everyone else on the ship, we went on the Alotau Cultural Festival tour. The locals dress up and put on a colourful, musical and cultural extravaganza with a sail on a war canoe being the highlight of the trip. Beyond this tour the options are extremely limited. The very small town has little to offer and the folks are extremely poor by western standards.

You must do the tour of an aboriginal village. The poverty of the poor country is evident and they rely on tourism for their economy. We did not witness the stories of high crime.

Loved this port of call. It's likely not for everyone Very hot and humid Port area is quite small with little to no shopping Local people very friendly and tour to a native village was very interesting

Our introduction to PNG was Alotau. It was a steamy hot day even though the start of spring. We walked to the markets which were very basic. Locals who we spoke to were friendly but you could see others were still wary about visitors.
