We've been to Costa Rica before and love it; this particular port requires extensive driving for the tours. Our guide here was really lousy.

Not much to see here. Did a ship's tour to the river for wildlife. Guide Leo was excellent

Didn't like Puntarenas, nothing to do and the excursions were very expensive

Port was commercial as was Guatemala, so only souvenir shops, but more than Guatemala. Was able to walk down street if desired. Excursion was bus, boat, & train. Interesting to see how people lived, boat ride seeing flora & fauna (birds & crocodiles), train was one direction through mangrove swamps full of discarded shampoo bottles, water bottles, children’s toys, clothing items, and various houses and warehouses. Could have done without the train ride. I would like to return to Costa Rica and see the sloth habitats.

We did the train ride and river cruise. Skip the train ride. It was just a tour of poverty. As for the river cruise, it had potential, but.... we learned that whether or not you see wildlife (crocs, etc) depends on the tide. We were there at the wrong time.
