Take the Gatun Locks and Embera Indian Village tour. You take a short bus trip to the Melia Hotel and board a boat for a ride on the Gatun Lake. We saw monkeys. The Embera village was very nice and they had crafts for sale. The Gatun Observation area was right on the locks. Great views of the ships going through the locks. Also great view of the new locks. Very good tour.

We are very independent travelers and were dismayed to find that the only way to actually get off the ship was to take a shore excursion with Princess. Had we realized that, we would have pre-booked to get discount. We ended up doing the Miralocks and IMAX experience. Glad we did.

Took the PC train trip. What a waste of time. Ferried to port, boarded a bus to Cristobal. Boarded a train to Panama City. Boarded the bus that followed us from Cristobal. Which took us to a terrible shopping mall then took us back to Cristobal where we boarded the ship. Loved the Canal!

This cruise was all about the transit for my husband and he wasn't disappointed. We took advice and stayed on board to experience it both ways and as we'd heard that most people get off we'd have the ship to ourselves. We loved it but so many people we met had a great time doing the full transit that we kind of wished we'd gone on that excursion.

So interesting to go through the canal. We had an aft balcony that enabled us to see everything, especially coming back through. Amazing to see the huge freighter towering over us. Everyone should go through the canal, if they get the chance. NCL provided documentary as we went through, very helpful and informative.
