We are very independent travelers and were dismayed to find that the only way to actually get off the ship was to take a shore excursion with Princess. Had we realized that, we would have pre-booked to get discount. We ended up doing the Miralocks and IMAX experience. Glad we did.

Barley saw this port but I went on a fabulous excursion into the rainforest and learned about the Indians who taught the Americans what to eat and not eat; how to protect themselves from malaria, insecet bits ,etc. The ship uses Tours that have guides registered in the Country of Panama, no B.S. here. Everyone who acts as a guide had a four-year degree.

This was the most important item from our bucket list. We finally did it. It was extremely slow! Four hours in, four hours sitting idle on a lake, then four hours out. Carnival should have arranged a docking on the lake for shopping or excursions.

Going through the locks is very interesting (but slow). This was the main reason we went on the cruise and it was worth it. Took a "New Locks"/Gatun Lake cruise/rain forest tour. It was not too good and not as advertised - "New Locks" visitor center just showed a film, an overlook of the locks, and a gift shop. No museum and no guided tour of locks as advertised. Gatun Lake cruise was too short and didn't see much. Rain forest "nature hike" was a 20 minute walk down a former US Army site gravel path. Not much to see.
