We wanted to come to Panama to see the Panama Canal. We did an excursion that sailed on a ferry through the canal. The experience was awesome and we got some great photos as we cruised along the canal.

Colon is desperately poor, no traffic lights or stop signs? Then we drove the hour to Panama City, well, couldn't be more different. All the money seems to be on the west side of the country.

The was just a commercial shipping port with now shopping available near the ship. It was also pouring rain that day and we were happy to have not booked a tour.

I know about Colon from others' experiences, and the ship offered no tours in it. Frankly, if the Captain took me out in his personal limo for "Colon Highlights" I would not go. Nevertheless, I saw gangs of young people all dressed up to go out, heading out for the discos in the harbor area. I hope they all got back. Seriously, this is the crime capital of the Caribbean. I'm sorry for them, but it's totally a hands off port for any sensible person.

We drove through to meet up with the ship. Based on the areas we drove through, I would get off the boat in this port.

We spent today around Colon. Booked a tour to the new Locks and Portabello through RCL - it was interesting (but a little squishy on the bus). There’s a lot of construction within the port precinct, another 12 months and it should be great. There are cafes and souvenir shops handy, but we didn’t venture past these. The blocks behind the Colon 2000 precinct are full of beautiful buildings that haven’t had the luxury of maintenance in a long time. Some are derelict and others are people’s homes. Litter is obvious- but this place does not have the same systems in place as a lot of us do at home. Yes, we had to buy Panama hats!
