We hired a taxi driver to take us to the new and old locks. We were driven through the city that was horrifically poor and filthy. Block upon block of abandoned homes with no doors or windows, trash spilling out and filth everywhere. Plus, sickly stray dogs made me very sad.

Super dangerous nothing to see. we stay at the port and shop in the grocery store the coffee was the best price there including Columbian coffee.

Port not exciting but tour of Panama Canal we took was great. Went on a ferry through 3 of the locks. Recommend it!!!

Colon was the pick up point after excursions from Gatun Lake. We drove through the city on our return and were shocked by how run down it is. Such a shame but surely this is down to the local government to improve? The canal must bring in substantial income to the local economy. We popped over to the local shops adjacent to the port for postcards. We didn’t feel threatened but made sure we returned before it got dark. It really shouldn’t be regarded as a port stop just a pick up point.
