I suggest going with a group here. Many beggars & market is a hard place to negotiate. You WILL get lost in there & someone will "help" you find your way back & expect payment for their services.

Find a guide, have them walk you through the old city. Eat some olives, pat some kitties wear excellent walking shoes because of the stairs and steep inclines. DO NOT do this without a reputable guide.

Very interesting place the last time we visited was in the early 70`s and it does not appear to have changed narrow streets buildings leaning and living conditions appear primitive.

Don't go into town early. Was creepy and you felt followed (almost insecure) as there were too few people around. Bring a map of town. It is confusing.

Took a tour of Tangier arranged through an independent vendor. Guide and Driver provided us a wonderful experience. We stopped at several locations that our Guide knew personally that offered a unique experience. Hercules Cave was interesting. Enjoyed a mint flavored tea for a relaxing refreshment. Walking tour of the city involved a substantial amount of walking so be prepared. Also be prepared to be challenged by aggressive street vendors. Our guide adjusted our schedule to accommodate personal requests such as visiting the local market to see the fish/meat vendors and then to a spice vendor where one could obtain freshly prepared spices.

Morning excursion to Tetouon offered scenic drive with view of mountains and sea, walk through city famous for Spanish-Moorish architecture, walk through Casbah and Medina, and best of all a lengthy visit to government school for arts and crafts with opportunities to watch students at work and to talk to them about their work

Had a personal tour guide that we met as we were getting off ship. 1/2 price of ship's excursion and saw more.

We booked a tour with the cruise- total scam. We walked around until we got to a "bazaar" (indoor shop) that was full of men trying to sell stuff that no one wanted. All day trip and all we got were 2 cookies and mint tea. No time to go to a real shopping area or try real food. And learned little from our guide- he just walked us through streets.

Terrible city. Dirty and seedy. I took an excursion which took us to a light house and for tea & pastries at a very nice hotel. I did not like walking past an area were men were skinning animals and chopping them up. Do not try to do this port on your own.
