Walk to the closest station from the port - there is one about 5 minutes away and a station a further walk away (don't take the bus as you will get stuck in traffic). Take the train to Sapporo- it is 20-30 mins away from memory. Here you can find the park, previous Olympic city, shops, great food places etc. In August last year there was a huge beer festival spread through the city's Central Park.

Otaru is a delightful destination with easy access to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. There is plenty to see around Otaru itself if you just want to wander or take a taxi to nearby attractions (Old Aoyama Villa -Herring palace & Kihinkan garden, Otaru Aquarium, Mt Tengu lookout). However a rapid train trip to Sapporo from Otaru station takes only 40 minutes and about Y1600 to see Odori Park, the JR Observation Tower, and Nakajima Park. Autumn is a good time to see fall colours around these northern ports.

Sapparo was great, especially the ski jump. Would love to have seen any attraction having to deal with Kabuki, Shinto temples, Geisha and/or sumo. These are very attractive destinations in Japan

Reentering Japan. Took up to 5 hours to clear immigration. Don’t plan an independent excursion as no allowances were made for this. Took local canal cruise which is within walking distance from port.
