We took the ship's excursion to Hue, about One and a half hours from the port. The guide was very interesting and the journey passed quickly. There was a lot to see and I understand that they have to make sure we return to the ship on time, but the guide was too fast and didn't hold his number up. Quite a few of us lost track of him. By luck some found him and asked him to wait for us, but by the time we arrived at the coach stop, they had gone on for lunch. Luckily another guide fro the same company saw us and took us in a taxi for the lunch. We arrived before the coach! If you go on a tour and the guide is fast, tell him to slow down.

We did the cycle and walking tour here in Hoi An. A lovely way to see the rice paddies and experience the town at a slower pace.

Once we got off the ship and by the gates entrance we found a bunch of other (5) self guided guests and hire our own van to drive us around for the day. It was the best thing we could have done! 2 of the ladies speak Vietnamese and was able to get us experience the real local culture: private boat ride on the perfume river, street Bánh mì, local beef noodle soup that are soooo good. Tours of the castle, museums and paddle bikes. I thinks we spend less than $45USD pp.

When I investigated excursions in advance they used a crazy pricing system:1 or 2 person $300. If 10 people book the price is down to $70. I decided I would rather have a firm price so booked with Vietnam Unique Tours. They were excellent. We were met with a sign and had a car and driver for the day for about the same cost as ship excursion. Tt

Da Nang was a really nice city with lovely markets, temples and a museum. Only saw the Dragon Bridge from the bus - would have rather not gone to the museum for that long and instead taken a few pics of the Dragon Bridge instead.
