We would recommend doing an excursion. We did not and found the city very difficult to navigate on our own and the market was disappointing. Very commercial, a lot of clothing, purses, jewelry, shoes, geared towards westernized tastes. We did find more traditional vendors towards the Eastern side. If we went back we would do an excursion in a heartbeat, probably to the mosque, which we did not feel was within walking distance for us.

Mall is great. Market pales in comparison to weekend market in Bangkok. Beautiful sites, discovered on our own. Excursion staff gave incorrect directions about where to go for the bus excursion. Just worthless staff.

The two things that stand out the most was being held a virtual hostage by the rug merchant. The dining experience was a little sketchy ,cleanliness of the food preparation as well as "any" of the wash room facilities we had the opportunity to expierience.

Watch out for people selling on the street. They would not leave you alone.
