The port is commercialized and pretty soulless, definitely the low-point on the itinerary. Rent a car or take a tour and get out of there ASAP!

The Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm was truly incredible. There are about 20, 000 seahorses and you even get to hold one. A tour of one of the Kona coffee plantations is interesting.

Walk around and see the sights near the dock. There is a royal palace that was damaged in the recent earthquake and across the street is an interesting church. Farther down the road is the Kona Inn and shopping area. Eat at the Inn with a great view and shop the shops. Great collection of old surfboards at the Inn. Big mounted fish too. There are free shuttles to Hilo Hatties, WalMart and Kmart. The Kmart shuttle will drop you off at a new shopping indoor/outdoor complex with some unique items.

Best shopping/ Captain Zodiac is rough on a motorized raft but if you back and neck can take it it was a blast. Saw a lot of Dolphins and fish.

This island is touted to having the best snorkeling. So I went on the Captain Zodiac raft excursion. It was very fun but we were not taken to a great snorkeling site. I am comparing to Caribbean snorkeling so Hawaii may not compare. But I was glad I went. I picked up 10% Kona coffee at the Kona Walmart and got a great deal compared to the gift shops.
