We did sightseeing on our own. With the one day less on our cruise because of the mandatory dry dock Saturday we went to the Polynesian Cultural Center in a rental car and enjoyed it very much after we disembarked. We appreciated the hotel accommodations at Hilton Hawaiian Village for the one day we were not on the ship.

Oahu is a city like many others. Many things to see/do. Pearl Harbor a must. Waikiki beach shoots off fireworks on Friday evenings if you come in the day before sailing.

We spent 3 nights before and found Honolulu to be a safe, walkable city (we are from the NYC area.) Waikiki is nice to walk at sunrise before the crowds get there, but if you want a beach day, go while in Kauai or Kona or go to the other side of Oahu. On the day of embarkation, we hikied up Diamond Head early in the morning, sampled international foods at the farmer's market, toured Iolani Palace (reserved in advance.)

Make sure you see the North Shore with a local tour company. The Surf Bus was so much fun and the guides were local boys who know the sites inside out. If you do Pearl Harbour on your own, choose a small tour company not one of the big buses. It's busy and crowded and like us, you could lose track of your tour. We were almost left behind and had to flag our bus down as it was pulling out. That wouldn't happen on a small tour bus.

We enjoyed a walking tour of the city and learned all about the Golden Plover bird from a local, after sighting this bird. We learned this bird lives in Alaska during the summer months, then when winter approaches, set off for it's trip to Hawaii, of a distance of about 2,500 miles. Also, as there are no islands along the way, this trip lasts about 88 hours! We went on the Atlantis Submarine and Adventure & Waikiki tour. I thought Waikiki was beautiful, but the submarine ride was less then expected, too crowded and pretty much staged.
