Anytime you can rent a car and see the beauty of the Islands it's never a waste of time.

Take an excursion either of your own or from the ship. Of not... visit a very standard city and shop

Rented a car and headed for the Volcano. There were 4 of us and we wanted to do our own thing. The shuttle buses were crowded and the car rental companies are only allowed to take their own patrons making some buses over crowded and others with only 2 passengers. When we arrived to pick up our car, the line was so long at our reserved company, we opted for a different company. I recommend taking a taxi to the airport at this port.

Cold lava flows are a must-see. Would have liked to have had ship pass active lava discharge into ocean at sunset.

Hilo is a "normal" town. Really nice local parks close by the pier and a gorgeous waterfall that is barely 1.5 miles out of town.
