Great feeling in Hilo. If you want to see flowing lava, go from here, the helicopter or plane is much cheaper than from Kona. Mauna Loa crater is cool.

We took a "Best of Hilo" tour offered by a vendor as we exited the ship. This was great! Much better than the Kauai tour the day before (see above). This tour did it all: waterfalls, the zoo, observing surfers at a private beach, the Mauna Loa nut factory, and an opportunity to walk on a "black sand" beach among other highlights. Definitely not to be missed.

The Volcano National Park was only about an hour's drive and very interesting. They had a rain forest area in the Park that was lush and beautiful. We did not have to walk very far to see the sights there. The entire area was green and lush and truly beautiful. If you only rent a car once this should be it.
