I would say visiting hilo it is best if you sign up for a tour or stay on board that day and enjoy the ship. you might try a car rental if you have a destination, as we did.

Volcanoes National Park is a must see. Henry was our tour guide and his knowledge of the sites made this a top notch tour. The buffet lunch at Volcanoe House was medocre at best. When we arrived they were out of almost everything so it was scarce picking to even find something to eat.

A must see is Volcano National Park... The night cruising of the ship was awsome seeing the lava flows.
