Excellent port right in town, easy get on/off. Thoroughly enjoyed Pompeii ship excursion in morning. Then Naples tour private operator afternoon.

No tours planned so once through the port chose a driver to take us to Pompeii and Sorrento for 50 Euro each. Our driver got a group of 7 together and off we went. Started at Pompeii. Our driver allowed us 2 hours there and showed us where to meet him. Unfortunately we must have struck the day school kids were also visiting as it took us almost 45 minutes to get a ticket and get in the gate. It didn't help there was only 1 cashier on for 1/2 hour trying to deal with all the people. Another did arrive later. So it was a mad rush to try and get around as many sites as we could. I doubt we even saw 1/4 of the area. Any area of interest had crowds of people trying to get close to get photo's and some rooms were so full of people it wasn't worth trying to get in. We didn't want to be late to meet our driver so basically went in a straight line from the entry to exit. It was a shame really, looking at flyers about Pompeii we totally missed all the interesting residential areas. The museum is worth visiting - this is where many of the artefacts located in the ruins and the preserved bodies of people are kept. GO EARLY AND ALLOW ALL DAY HERE to get the most out of it. If I could, I would have given Sorrento a miss just to spend more time in Pompeii. Sorrento was pretty, again our driver gave us 2 hours there and showed us where to meet him. He recommended a restaurant for lunch and we spent most of our time ordering and eating, pizza, carbonara, meatballs & spaghetti, pesto pasta with wine. Absolutely delicious. Traffic was busy but our driver wasted no time getting us back to port. There was a huge line of people at the customs area of the port which was unusual. Local security were doing bag and body checks before everyone got to the ship. Normally checks were done ON the ship. Several ship managers were out with the passengers so I'm not sure what was going on.
