We did the Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri excursion. It was a long full day that followed a long full day. We stayed in Praiano a few years ago and knew we wanted to come back to see Pompeii. I would have loved a combo of Pompeii and any beach.

Loved Naples, the Amalfi coast and Pompeii. So much history and information we want to go back again. Our tour guide was funny and very informative. Lunch was outstanding. We had homemade spaghetti noodles in red sauce, red and white wine, appetizers and dessert. The most weightless cake we've ever had. We did an excursion in Athens.

Stay away from the aggressive and expensive cabbies.. the metro (subway) is relatively close to the port, construction will likely bring it closer. The subway will take you just about anywhere in Naples, a=including the train station, making destinations like Pompei and Sorrento an economic train ride away, sadly there is not an express train to Sorrento, so you'll need to keep track of your time. The express train to and from Pompei is the way to go.

Pompeii is fascinating and we suspect Herculaneum is too, but the city of Naples and the complications of the Pompeii site detracted from our enjoyment of this day. We took the "Pompeii On Your Own" excursion and wished we had taken the guided one instead. Pompeii does not have a well-organized entry system, so the growing crowd had to wait for almost an hour just to buy tickets. Meanwhile all sorts of unknown guides were trying to get us to buy their services. The guides got to cut in the front of the line, which was nice for their customers, but it further slowed the other visitors' waiting time. If we'd been warned we'd have bought tickets online, as that allowed you to go to a shorter line. Once back in Naples we tried to get to the archaeological musem where most of the mosaics from Pompeii are housed. It was challenging to figure out how to find a Metro stop, the way to the museum, a place to eat, etc., as Naples is a big busy city, and not too scenic in the areas near the port.

Naples is great, but if you've never been before just be warned that it's one of the dirtiest cities in the world. Most buildings are covered in graffiti and grime, thousands of homeless people on the streets, and very little tourist-centered accommodation. We went to the National Archeological Museum and were shocked that such priceless treasures were not climate controlled, were getting the city's filthy pollution on them, and the museum had no amenities (no cafe, no wi-fi, no air conditioning) to help out tourists like us who had walked 3 miles in the hot sun to recover. Think of putting your 1000 objects as important as the Mona Lisa in a fifty square mile sewer and that's Naples :-)

I love this port!! So much to do it was hard to decide. Luckily I’ve been here before so I’m not hating myself for skipping Capri! We took a tour along the Amalfi coast, first stopping in Sorrento for a limoncello tasting. Basically a shop stop ( but ok - wish I had picked up the sandals I saw there). We then drove to Positano - my objective! It was beautiful but since we were a larger bus, we couldn’t go into the village which was a huge disappointment for me. We then had about an hour or so in Amalfi - which is a beautiful city on the coast. The dri e up through Ravello is vertigo-inducing!! If you want the views, sit on the right side. If you get vertigo sit on the left! Our final stop was Pompeii, and being near the end of the tourist run we had much less crowds. We only had 1 1/2 hrs here and there’s so much to see that we wished for more. Our guide at Pompeii was very informative! We made it back to the port with enough time to deal with the queues through security again. One shop owner started to sing Italian opera to entertain us!
