If you want to experience the Norway nature and see the fjords, the Overland tour from Hellesylt to Geiranger is the way to do it. It’s fantastic. The highlight of the whole cruise. You get to see Norway from the inside and not just from a dock. Lakes, valleys, mountains, fjords.... unbelievable. It was the most expensive tour, but it was worth every penny. The best pictures and memories of the cruise come from this tour. Highly recommend.

The town here is Geiranger which has 200 people and booking a ship excursion would be advised here. Hiking, biking, and kayaking in this area. A spectacular trip is taking the ship excursion via bus up the road to the Dalsnibba viewpoint. At 45ooo feet elevation (way above the tree line) you have a spectacular view of Norway's mountain and way below you can see your ship which is now tiny in comparison. Fabulous sight. We went on the 8 hour bus tour that eventually got here. Better would be the 3 hour trip which would give you some time to kick around tiny Geiranger on your own.

We did the Mountain Farm visit. Expectations were not high. What a surprise. Most gorgeous landscapes you could ever wish for. Felt like we had been dropped into a Lord of the Rings set.

Geiranger was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Happy to drop people off in Hellesylt and sit up on deck to watch the boat cruise into the fjord. Here we booked a RIB boat tour direct with the company and paid less then half the excursion and had less people on our boat. Amazing tour would not hesitate to recommend. You can also rent bikes right at the port which we did and bikes around the town.

Did not get off ship here.....was a drop off for full day excursions ending in Geiranger. The scenery---waterfalls, mountains, fjords were spectacular!!!

No problems leaving the ship this time. There's not much at Hellesynt given that only about 200 people live there but it does provide the departure point for the ferry to Geiranger which takes you down the famous Geirangerfjord which is truly magnificent. Once again book the trip directly with the ferry company and not MSC. It's not cheap but well worth it. Geiranger itself is a pretty cool little place which most of your fellow cruisers won't ever see. Actually if the mountain side collapses as the Norwegians are expecting it to at some point* then nobody will be able to see it so get booking ASAP. * Fans of Norwegian disaster films (they really are a 'thing' you know) will recognise this as the premise of the 2015 film "The Wave" where Geiranger is unceremoniously wiped out by a flood of biblical proportions.
