Did not do an excursion. many people on board went to the beach here. Tendered to Giardini Naxos and then a bus up to the town of Taormina, which higher up on the mountain. Walked around, it is an absolutely beautiful town with plenty to do. Had a great lunch, gelato and cannolis. There is even a store that sells typical Sicilian street food that is normally sold only by street vendors in Palermo.

Port was great, but Crystal did not provide free transportation to Taormina. Instead the bus was $69 per person. We could have taken a cab round trip for less than the motor coach and arrived and departed Taormina as we preferred.

Actually, Taormina was another tender port, but the sea was too choppy so we docked at the port in Messina, 32 miles away. We had no scheduled excursions so we walked off the pier to the cathedral plaza and took an open car/train city tour, then had canoli and tea at an outdoor cafe'.

Taormina, Sicily is VERY pretty. The Norwegian Gem anchors in a beautiful spot and our outdoor breakfast overlooking Taormina was lovely. We tendered over after all the excursion people had left and had a quick, easy trip over. The old town is way up the hill, so we took a Hop On Hop Off bus up with some other people we met on board the ship. The bus ride itself is very scenic. So many shops and restaurants on narrow streets with beautiful vines hanging overhead. We headed upward to Parco Archeologica Naxos, paid 8 euros (I think) and enjoyed seeing the ancient ampitheater, on top of the hill, looking down over Taormina and the sea. You could spend hours there and in the old town, walking and shopping. Catching the Hop On Hop Off bus back down was a problem for us, because the bus never stopped when we would wait by the correct signs. So we ended up walking most of the way down, and paying ANOTHER bus company 15 euro to get to the port on time. Once there, the line was a mile long to tender back to the Gem but we all made the best of it, and the Gem provided fruit infused water while waiting.
